Iluminada Bermudez Bañez, born on November 26, 1934, Pen-ned, Sta. Maria Ilocos Sur, Philippines, took her last breath peacefully on Wednesday, January 25th, 2023, in Manassas, Virginia. She was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest. The memories of the resilient life she lived will truly last forever.

Lumen, as many would call her, lived a life full of strength and endurance. Many will forever remember her as the woman who lived for her children and husband, Wilfredo Cacho Bañez . At the time, in sixth grade, she and Wilfredo had no idea that their love story would be a story for everyone to tell. A love story that is dear to many hearts. A love story that is mesmerizing

and inspirational. After high school, Lumen finally married the love of her life on May 23rd, 1955. As many would recall, she was unconditionally loved by her husband for 65 years prior to his passing in 2020. She was a role model mother by expressing her love to all six of their children. Her constant display of resilience and strength throughout four strokes in the last 37 years is a true testament of “never giving up and never quitting”. Not only did she love her husband unconditionally, but she extended her adoration to many others including her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her constant smile was contagious, and her singing was adored by everyone. Though multiple strokes left her with memories that were a blur, her actions and recollection of Wilfredo proved true unconditional love never diminishes.

Iluminada was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt, but she was also a woman who worked hard. As an individual who worked as a hairdresser, a seamstress, a farmer, and as an active leader in her local community. She was honest and valued. A woman who persevered and conquered who led her life by example, and by that she will always be remembered.

Iluminada is survived by her children, Wilma Hogan (Richard), Richard Bañez (Doreen), Bobby Bañez (Madelyn), Wilfredo Bañez, Jr. (Beth), and Arlene Bañez Reed (Frank); her eighteen grandchildren; her fifteen great-grandchildren; and her several nieces, nephews, and many loved ones. She was preceded in death by her second oldest daughter Myrna and her husband Nestor Espiritu.

Mom,

We will always remember your special

smile, your caring heart, and your warm embrace.

Come rain or shine you were always there for us,

not once have you ever abandoned us.

The memory of you will forever remain in our hearts,

for there will never be anyone else like you.

Guestbook

  1. I first met mom and dad at their home in Babel-lasion, when Wilma and I traveled there as part of our honeymoon. I have very found memories of that visit and again a year later with our new baby, Eileen. I learned much about the Philippines and the wonderful Banez family from mom and dad and thought very highly of both of them. They lived with us in California for a short time and again for many years here in Vienna, Virginia. As they got older, they were not very active but they remained a strong positive presence in our house. The neighbors all remember them and thought very positively of them also. Now that they are both gone, it is wonderful to have many positive memories of these two kind and caring parents, grandparents and great grandparents. May they both Rest In Peace!
