Joan, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 28th. She was born on February 8th, 1934 to James and Doris Miller. Joan was the oldest of 5 children and spent her childhood in New Cumberland, PA. After graduating from nursing school in Harrisburg, PA she married Tony and moved to Fort Wayne, IN where she worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital. They built a home in 1961 and raised their family in Vienna, where she also enjoyed a long and rewarding career as a registered nurse caring for patients at Arlington and Fairfax Hospitals.

Joan was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vienna, VA and also at New Covenant United Methodist Church in The Villages, FL in her later years. She also supported her children and their activities at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna.

Joan’s passions:

- Her marriage to her wonderful, caring husband Tony

- The pride she had in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren

- Her belief in God and the church family she had at Wesley and New Covenant United Methodist Church

- The lifelong friendships she built

- Rooting for Tony at his softball games, she was his biggest fan

- Love of cooking, baking (especially cookies) and entertaining

- Crafts and sewing

- Ballroom dancing

- Reading, crossword and word search puzzles

Joan leaves behind a wonderful legacy. Her loving husband of 63 years, Tony; four children Mark (Lauren), Lisa (John), Mike (Patti) and Sue (Jamey). She was the proud grandma of 10 grandchildren; Joshua H., Joshua S., Billy (Jill), Matt, Amy, Brian (Lauren), Alicia (Austin), Eric (Jenna), Erin (Steven), Lauren (Wally) and 7 great-grandchildren; Holloway, Liam, Jace, Lilah, Coraline, Jude and Charlie. She is also survived by her sister Gayle, her brother Bob and many nieces and nephews.

Rest in peace sweet Joan. You will be missed tremendously. God Bless You.

***Although we welcome anyone that wishes to pay their condolences from 10am to 11am, the capacity for the 11am service in the chapel is limited to 50 people due to the Covid-19 social distancing guidelines. Close friends of the family are welcome to attend the service. Others can view the service online as it will be broadcast live.   2. We were so deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your Mom. Our hearts go out to your sweet Dad and to all of your kids who lost such a sweet grandma. They were so lucky to have her in their life.

  3. Joan & Tony were very family connected & when all our children were young we all met at Nanny & PopPop’s & our children were close. Over time we all moved away for jobs but whenever in areas together we were always to stay with Joan & Tony & we felt very family loved & connected.
