Katherine Louise Burleigh Murphy (Kitty), age 86, of Annandale, VA, formerly of Vienna, VA, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Born March 5, 1933 in Washington, D.C., she was the only daughter of the late John Thomas “Poppy” Burleigh and Frances Eileen “Mimi” (Mirley) Burleigh.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joseph Bernard Murphy, two daughters, Mary Murphy Hyland (Chuck) of Fairfax, VA, Julie Murphy Wells (Greg) of Arlington, VA, two sons, John Patrick Murphy (Barbara) of Fairfax, VA, Michael Joseph Murphy (Sherin) of Warrenton, VA and thirteen grandchildren. Kitty was a graduate of the Visitation Academy in Frederick, MD and Georgetown University School of Nursing in Washington, D.C., where she first met and fell in love with a Georgetown graduate student named Joe. They were married on February 16, 1957 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington, D.C.

During the early years of their marriage, she was a stay at home mom caring for her young children at 8327 Syracuse Circle in Dunn Loring Woods, Vienna. She returned to work outside the home in the mid 1970’s and was employed for a number of years as a nurse, primarily by Dr.’s Pearson & Stewart, an OB/GYN private practice. While she enjoyed this work, she always said that her happiest times were spent with her children and grandchildren, particularly family vacations at Rehoboth Beach, DE and the Outer Banks, NC. She was an avid music fan and loved attending concerts and shows with Joe.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Thinking of all of you at this time of loss. I will always remember Mrs Murphy for her smile and positive words of wisdom.

  2. Memories of Kitty go back to when our children were in high school chorus. Concerts & exchange trips. Later going to hear Eddie From Ohio play. There were many years of carpooling into work, dinners with the Murphys and Sands, block parties, lunches at Neighbors and the arrival of grandchildren. Carl & I will miss Kitty’s enthusiasm, kindness and wonderful sense of humor. Our love and sympathy to all the family. Carl & Mary Anne McMillen
