Katherine M. Agarwal

July 25, 1945 – August 28, 2020

Katherine (nee Jones) Agarwal beloved wife, sister and Aunt passed away peacefully on August 28, 2020 at her home in McLean, VA at age 75 from cancer. Katherine (or Kathy or Kate, as she was known by friends and family), enjoyed reading, playing word and card games and she especially enjoyed her beloved cats, Rosie and Lily. Katherine was much loved by all. She was cherished for her kindness and caring. Katherine had a wonderful sense of humor, and a keen sense of adventure. She also had a quick wit—including a mischievous streak because, in her words, she had to “keep you on your toes.”

Katherine was a strong believer in the benefits of education and was always interested in what her nieces and nephews were studying. She and her husband Kamal started a foundation for schools in India that focused on identifying and educating girls from underprivileged families so that they might have a better life.

Katherine was married briefly to David Ronka, of Charlottesville, VA, with whom she maintained cordial contact over time. Katherine met Kamal in 1975, and they were married for 41 joy-filled years. Throughout their marriage, Katherine and Kamal traveled extensively, many times with other family members including her sister Margaret (Maggie) and Kamal’s sisters Chandan Agarwal and Manju Mithal, with whom she was particularly close.

Katherine was predeceased by her parents Joel and Virginia Jones and her nephew Joel Jones III. She is survived by her husband, Kamal, brothers Joel (Sharon), Kurt (Nancy), Blaine (Lee), sister Maggie, brother John (Sherene), sisters-in-law Chandan and Manju, and her uncle Gary Liscombe (Phyllis) plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed by all.

Due to COVID 19, a memorial service will not be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, the ASPCA, and Doctors Without Borders.

  1. Would like to make my peace with Katie she was a good friend for many many years and I am sorry she suffered Perhaps we will meet again someday Cathy Javaid

  2. Katherine was the light and rock of our family, especially once our parents passed on. She was fun–everyone’s favorite big sister, aunt, and she loved her husband Kamal fiercely. She loved to tease–in our family, there is a 17-year spread from oldest child to youngest. Katherine was the oldest, and along with our oldest brother Joel, delighted teasing the two youngest (John and me) as being “old eggs.” We in turn gave as good as we got–referring to them as “rough drafts.” Many good laughs were had by all. You’re in our hearts, Katie–you may be just out of sight, but never out of our hearts and minds. Much love, Kitten! –Margaret

  3. For us she was our mami(aunt). She was a loving, kind and a generous lady with a beautiful heart. We will remember her awesome smile, her sense of humor and her delicious mac and cheese. May God give immense strength to Kamal mama, Margaret and family to bear this loss. Always in our heart Kathy mami – Surabhi and Vishal

  4. Mrs. Kathy You will always live in my heart ?? very hard to understand that you are not with us anymore Beautiful person inside and out with a great heart you will truly be missed.

  5. I will always remember Katie as a joyful, kind, and gracious person, inviting me to her home and cooking meals for me when I was in college, being one of the first to welcome my husband in the family, and sending baby gifts when my kids were born. She was always thoughtful, caring, and inclusive, and great fun to talk to, particularly given our shared love of books. She will be missed.

  6. Katie was my next door neighbor for many years and several times weekly included me in dinner with her and her husband. We could get the giggles about work, jokes, and just life events. It was a blessing just to be around her.
