Obituary for Kevin McIntyre

KEVIN J. McINTYRE

Kevin Joseph McIntyre, 58, a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend and a former Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), died peacefully on January 2, 2019, at his home in Arlington, Virginia, after battling brain cancer with great determination, courage and faith.

Kevin was born on December 27, 1960, the second of five children in Jack and Alice McIntyre’s career-military family. The family’s frequent moves to new duty stations meant that the siblings, close in age, were each other’s best friends and entertainment. Kevin kept his brothers and sisters close-knit throughout their adulthood and was exceptionally engaged in his nieces' and nephews' lives.

After earning a BA from San Diego State University and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center, Kevin thrived in his chosen field of energy law, spending the bulk of his 30-year career as a partner at Jones Day, where he co-led its global energy law practice. His devotion to Jones Day and to the law was rivaled only by his selfless commitment to his clients. His career culminated with public service as Chairman of the FERC, where he led policy changes to improve the reliability of the nation’s electric grid, enhance the efficiency of its energy markets, and better serve America’s energy consumers.

Kevin lived a life of faith, service, and leadership, generously serving his fellow parishioners at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, and fulfilling leadership roles in various Georgetown Law alumni organizations, the John Carroll Society, the Energy Bar Association, and the American Century Theater, among others.

Kevin’s greatest joy was as husband to his beloved wife, Jenny, and father to their three amazing children. They were his compass and his passion, and he lived his devotion to them in all ways large and small. He was known to carry one, two, or sometimes all three of his children on long walks to a local cafe, and he ended each day with a sacrosanct family bedtime ritual known as “Poem, Prayer, and Song.” His spirit is fully alive in his wife and children who adore him and in the faith they all share.

In a life built on cultivating and keeping friendships, Kevin leaves behind a legion of true friends to whom he was fiercely loyal and whose support has lifted up, and will continue to sustain, his family and his memory. He had a gregarious personality, incisive mind, wicked sense of humor, and indomitable spirit and shared these gifts with all who knew him. Kevin was passionate about music, theater, and all things Celtic; a zealous fan of Nationals and Orioles baseball and Georgetown basketball; and an avid runner who completed five marathons.

Kevin is survived by his wife Jenny McIntyre, whom he married in 2008, and their cherished children Lizzie (9), Tommy (7) and Annie (5); parents Jack and Alice McIntyre; parents-in-law Leger and Irene Brosnahan; siblings John (Francesca), Teresa Lent (Steve), Martha Kem (John) and Jim (Sarah); thirteen nieces and nephews; and a vast and loving extended family.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at 1:30 pm on Friday, January 11, 2019, at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington, Virginia, followed by a private burial at Columbia Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Kevin requested gifts to St. Thomas More Cathedral School (105 N. Thomas Street, Arlington, VA 22203) or Georgetown University Law Center (600 New Jersey Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001).
