Lois Neal Miller
November 24, 1925 ~ May 5, 2022
Lois Ann Neal Miller, age 96, of Gainesville, VA and formerly of Vienna, VA, died on Wednesday, May 5th, 2022. She was a resident of Vienna for 40 years before moving to the Virginian in Fairfax and then Heritage Village. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Robert W. Miller and daughter Carol Holder (Jerry). She is survived by her daughter Robbin Wallace (Mike), son Neal Miller (Carla), grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Lois was born in Harrisburg, PA, and during the depression she and her parents moved to Berwyn, PA. She lived there with her two aunts who doted on her and taught her all things cultural—visiting museums, plays and concerts. It was there she developed her passion for cooking, baking, gardening, sewing and needlework.
Lois’s family moved back to Cranford, NJ after the depression where she finished high school, graduated from secretarial school and began working in NYC in the financial district. She travelled to and from work each day by walking, then train and ferry to NYC. One day, on a whim, her friends talked her into attending a military dance where she met her future husband, Robert Miller. After a whirlwind romance they were married for 64 years, moving eight times until finally settling in Vienna, VA. Never a complainer, and always with a positive attitude, she would help settle in and decorate and provide a loving home for her husband and three children.
Lois loved to travel and visited almost all 50 states and numerous countries, meeting many friends along the way. She devoted over 1000 hours as a front desk volunteer welcoming patients to Fair Oaks Hospital. In addition she sewed many teddy bears to be given to pediatric patients, and was also a dedicated member of her PEO chapter in Vienna.
Over the years, Lois designed a yard fit for a landscaper’s dreams. With the help of her husband, who provided much of the physical labor, she was able to create spectacular gardens and make award winning flower arrangements.
She will be fondly remembered for her potato salad, which was always requested at family gatherings, her unique style of applesauce and her intricately decorated Christmas cookies, which were given away to friends and neighbors. Her sewing lives on with the dresses she designed and made for her granddaughters, and they are still being worn by her great granddaughters. She also volunteered to sew costumes for her daughters’ dance classes. Her needlework lives on in the homes of family and friends.
Lois treated others with dignity and kindness and treasured her family and friends. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
There will be a graveside service at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, VA, May 18th, 11:00 am.
