Mae S. Woods

Mae S. Woods

A loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and avid sports fan. She left this world suddenly on January 12, 2021. Mae was born to Foster and Clatie Strozier on August 7, 1940, the fourth of six children. After graduating from the former Clift high school in Opelika, she attended Judson College in Marion, Alabama after which she would reminisce fondly of her days there, touting her graduation from the school of "culture and refinement." Those who knew her then remember a very funny young woman who enjoyed group singing, hanging out with her friends, and playing pranks on mostly suspecting professors. Graduating with a master's degree in Religious Education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, Mae went on to work as a youth minister in Rome, Georgia and Shreveport, Louisiana. After marriage, Mae found herself in her favorite little town of Vienna, Virginia where she raised three nearly perfect children: Dan, Jeff, and Jen. Mae was a member of Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, Virginia and also attended activities at Vienna Presbyterian Church in Vienna, Virginia. At Columbia, Mae worked with the youth ministry program and, decades later, still referred with pride to "her teenagers." While able, Mae was active in Adult Sunday School and the church choir where she made some of her closest friends. She also made good friends in high school, college, every place she worked or volunteered, in her first apartment building in Dunn Loring, on her bowling team, in her neighborhood, at the store, on the sidewalk, and really, any place where good friends could be met and made. Mae loved the Washington National Team, Jesus, Auburn football, Patrick Mahomes, singing, talking on the phone (EXCEPT during a football game), her family and friends, and laughing (lots and lots of laughing) - not necessarily in that order. This world's loss is indeed heaven's gain. A memorial service will be arranged for August 2021 at Columbia Baptist Church. She will be buried at Fairfax Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department (vvfd.org). Friends and family are invited to view and sign the family guestbook at www.moneyandking.com

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I knew Mae from VPC and sang in the choir with her. Spent time chatting with her both there and at CVS as she arranged cards. What a beautiful woman who will be missed by many.

  2. Tim and I are deeply saddened by the loss of this friend and are praying for all of her family. Mae was a huge part of many good memories in choir, drama, and different activities at Columbia Baptist. I remember the time she and I sang a duet from The Messiah and I think we both were pleased that we were given that opportunity and we worked to be sure it went well. There was also “The Grasshopper Opera” experience- true farce—an event performed before either of us had children. Mae was unforgettable, witty, fun, a good friend, and her faith was strong and upheld her through all she faced. With love and sympathy, Linda Clagg

  3. Ms Woods legacy in her children, Jen in particular, is a testament to what an amazing woman and mom she was. Rest In Peace, Mae! -The Simpsons

  4. Dear Jennifer, Jeff, and Dan, We first got to know Mae when we were your neighbors back in the 90’s until we left in 2003. Mae was a wonderful neighbor and friend. We reconnected with her more recently through visits and later just on the phone. In spite of all her trials, she kept her fun sense of humor and positive spirit. Mae was very brave in how she handled all the physical limitations and pain she had to deal with. We will always remember Mae. With deep sympathy in your loss, Lloyd and Roberta Miller 124 Hemlock Lane Barboursville, VA 22923
