Mark Anthony Newell
October 12, 1965 ~ April 22, 2022
Mark Anthony Newell, beloved husband, brother and uncle passed away on April 22,2022 following a long, private and hard fought battle with cancer. He was 56.
Mark, although a longtime Virginia resident, was born in Tainan, Taiwan on October 12, 1965. The son of a Federal employee working overseas, the family lived in multiple countries before ultimately settling and living his childhood in Arizona, which he called home. Mark’s amazing life led him to earn a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Arizona, an M.B.A. from George Mason University, and his CPA certification from the commonwealth of Virginia. Mark committed his life to the service of his nation, and was a Senior Federal Executive for 30 years, serving in numerous and complex positions.
Outside of work, Mark was a sports fanatic and outstanding track and baseball athlete. He was an accomplished runner, completing the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC along with several local 5 and 10K's. As a younger man, he loved to play baseball and later enjoyed competing alongside his peers in a friendly but competitive softball league. Mark LOVED college basketball and looked forward to cheering on his Wildcats each March as they attempted to win another National championship. He proudly wore his U of A hat daily. In the summer months, Mark and his wife Chey routinely found themselves at Nationals games either here in Washington, DC or on the road as they were slowly making their way across the country to visit each major league ballpark.
Mark will be remembered as an extremely intelligent and caring person, a mentor, colleague, leader and great friend to all who knew him. He was taken from us entirely too soon.
Predeceased by his parents Clyde and Misako Newell, Mark is survived by his loving wife Chyllene (Chey), Sister Mary Ann Bracken (Dave), an extended family of nieces, nephews, brothers and sister in law, friends, colleagues and of course his fur babies, Zoey and Zimmerman. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in Mark’s name. Services will be held at the Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, Virginia Friday, April 29th. The service will begin at 2:00, guests will be permitted beginning at 1:00. Burial will be held in a private ceremony at a later date.

I’m Dennis Pitts my deepest and heart felt condolences to the family. Mark an I were pretty close back in school we played ball together had class together and laughed a lot. We talked a lot about life and what we wanted to do. He was my little brother an a great friend he always had to be dressed right and his hair had to be perfect. Love u my brother u will always be my little brother and my friend. RIP ur in God’s hands now
My husband and I were deeply saddened to hear about Mark’s passing. We have both worked with and known Mark for over 30 years. He was a smart and talented person and an inspiration to many. Please accept our deepest condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Gail and Richard Williams
Mark was a most amazing officer I had the honor to serve with for many many years. When we weren’t talking about how to bring more “true accounting” to some of our business areas, we were talking Nats baseball. His sense of duty coupled with his dry humor made every otherwise boring meeting we sat in together much more lively and meaningful. Mark will definitely be missed by all who knew and worked with him.

Mark came into our lives thru Todd & Trina Shull. He became part of our family right away. He was always spit & polished & seemed uppity but soon we realized that was his until got to know us! We loved him & I’m so heartbroken for our family & his. Love, Anita Ellis ♥
