Marlene Read Ettinger

September 21, 1940 ~ May 24, 2022
It is with great heartache that the family of Marlene Read Ettinger, 81, announces her death on Tuesday, May 24th, 2022.
Marlene was born in Dover, New Jersey on September 21st, 1940. She lived her childhood days in Succasunna with her late mother, Rebecca Bush Read, her late father, Howard Augustus Read, and two sisters, the late Joan Read Martin and Phyllis Read Mohrmann.
Marlene attended Pennsylvania State University and belonged to the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority in the early days of its founding. She met her predeceased husband, Glenn Elwood Ettinger, in the campus cafeteria. After dates to The Creamery, The Corner Room and many walks through the snow on campus to class, they married on December 16th, 1961. Both continued on at Penn State, graduating with their masters degrees.
Always a consummate event planner, hostess, decorator and art lover, Marlene entered a diplomatic life alongside her husband. They spent many years living overseas and raising their only child, Amy Ettinger Seymour. Marlene taught English while overseas and often invited her students over for gatherings with native English speakers to facilitate fun, interactive opportunities to connect and practice speaking English.
This quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes resonated with Marlene:
“As life is action and passion, it is required of a man that he should share the passion and action of his time, at the peril of being judged not to have lived.”
Marlene is survived by her sister, Phyllis Read Mohrmann, daughter, Amy Ettinger Seymour, son-in-law, Thomas Palmer Seymour, and three granddaughters, Megan Rebecca Seymour, Laura Adrienne Seymour and Emily Caroline Seymour.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
