Marlys S. Valpone

Marlys S. Valpone, a resident of McLean (Va.) and Scottsdale (Ariz.) died 9 September 2021.

Marlys will be cremated and inurned alongside her husband in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery sometime next summer. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Luke’s Catholic Church in McLean will be held on September 29, 2021 at 1PM with a reception to follow the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, Marlys requested expressions of sympathy be made in the form of a memorial donation to the Christ Child Society of Washington DC or Catholic Charities. (See Below)

Marlys was born and raised in Montana where her Norwegian grandparents were early settlers. She attended Colorado Women’s College (Denver) and graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. After the early death of her first husband, William Crowl, her college sweetheart, she moved to Washington DC where she worked briefly at the National Gallery of Art before joining the US Foreign Service. She was posted to Trieste, Italy, where she met and married her husband, Julius J. “Val” Valpone. They later lived in Rome, Italy for many happy years and returned to McLean in 1976, where they became members of St. Luke’s Catholic parish. Val died in 1986. Marlys is survived by their beloved daughter, Susanne, of Alexandria (Va.).

Marlys volunteered at Christ Child Opportunity Shop in Georgetown, played bridge regularly, enjoyed golf and gardening while a snowbird in Arizona, and welcomed any opportunity to dine out or travel.

Marlys really appreciated the care she received by the special staff at The Sylvestery in McLean these last two years. She always said she had a good life and felt blessed to have lived as long as she did.
