Norma Caudle Powell
March 24, 1929 ~ February 27, 2023
Norma Caudle Powell, daughter of Dora E. Barnhart and Early A. Caudle, and loving wife of the late George Henry Powell, passed at home, peacefully into heaven on Monday, February 27, 2023, at 93 years old. Her loving caregiver Teddy was by her side. She was born March 24, 1929, in Fairfax, VA and graduated from Fairfax High School.
She is the second of three children, with Hazel and Earl Jr., both predeceased. She is the mother of Ronnie (predeceased) (Carol-ex), Larry (Beth), Dickie (Jeanne), and Ricky (predeceased) (Johnny). She is the grandmother of nine: Nathan Powell (predeceased) (Karla Tanner), Brandon Powell, Jason Powell (Rosemary), Janelle Rostami (Sonny), Justin Powell (Ashley), Sheri Beauchamp (Jeb), Ryan Powell, Elizabeth Powell, and Joshua Powell (Nadine). Norma is the great grandmother of thirteen: Ethan Powell, Sloane Tanner, Colten Garshaw, Brendan & Daniel Powell, Abigail Beauchamp, Coleson, Brynley, Bryson, & Landon Powell, Ryleigh Rostami, Justin Jr., & Jacob Powell.
She had the joy and challenge of raising four energetic boys and trying to keep them out of trouble, which was not always so easy. The family enjoyed many vacations and worked on many home projects together. Her favorite job after raising her boys was as a school crossing guard, where she greeted and protected the children who went to Jermantown Elementary School in Fairfax for sixteen years before retiring.
Norma put her trust in Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized in testimony to that at Bethel Regular Baptist Church in Great Falls, VA. She was always eager to learn more about the Bible and God and regularly attended church to grow in her faith. She faithfully presented the good news of the gospel to family, friends, and acquaintances throughout her years, so grateful that her precious sister, Hazel had shared the same good news with her. She didn’t want anyone to miss out on going to heaven. Her testimony along with her sister Hazel’s and brother Earl’s has resulted in a blessed family heritage of many believers in Christ. Norma regularly prayed for her family and friends and was a great source of wisdom, strength, and encouragement to them. She was eagerly looking forward to the day when she would be reunited with the many family members and friends who had trusted in Christ and passed into heaven before her.
She created several poems and loved to show her creativity in many different crafts by making quilts, scarves, sweaters, Cabbage Patch Dolls and Pound Puppies for the grandchildren. One Christmas she made personalized sweatshirts for each family member.
Norma’s caregiver Teddy was Henry’s caregiver before he passed away. Teddy stayed on to care for her over the last twelve years and has faithfully and lovingly provided companionship and care in numerous ways. The family couldn’t be more grateful for his love and care for her.
She has been an inspiration to her family and faithfully remembered and celebrated everyone’s anniversaries and birthdays. She was loved by her family and many friends and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Avenue, Vienna, VA 22180 on Saturday, March 25th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm with the burial following at 2:30 pm at Fairfax City Cemetery, 10567 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22020. My husband and I took over a bingo for seniors group in Manassas Virginia about 23 years ago, That is where we met Norma and her cousins as well as the rest of the group. We fell in love with Norma and Teddy. She was always a joy to be around and we looked forward to seeing her for dinner and then bingo at the Golden Corral. She became a very dear friend.
I remember when Norma and Teddy came to our home for a fellowship dinner. She was the epitome of a perfect lady and I was a little nervous because our home showed evidence of 2 kids still living there. Norma not only made me feel comfortable but had such a wonderful sense of humor. By the way, she brought her renowned cake for our dessert. Peace to you, Norma, and to all the family.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Norma’s passing. Norma was such a wonderful and loving person, who cared about people, especially her family and relatives. She was very sensitive about how individuals and groups of people were characterized and talked about. Norma wanted everyone to be treated with respect and dignity. We would call each other and could talk about any issues of our times. Norma even would talk about herself and all the adversities that she faced in life. But through it all, her faith in God never wavered. Norma would not hold back her voice and truly would let you know where she stood.
From time to time, Norma would talk to me about Teddy and how they worked together as a team. Sometimes in our conversations, she would feel a little guilty about the amount of time that Teddy spent with her. I assured Norma that it seemed that Teddy enjoyed being around her—to give her comfort, peace, and enjoy life to its fullest. I cannot recall a time when I would see Norma without Teddy being nearby.
Norma was very concerned about Teddy always caring for her. From time to time, Norma would manage to give Teddy some space. She wanted Teddy to have fun and enjoy a good life where he could be around his friends.
I thank God for the opportunity to meet two truly amazing sisters, Norma and Hazel, about 15 years ago. The love and compassion that we had for each other increased through the years because of God’s grace. The Spirit of the Lord was always in our conversations. I have no doubt that our relationship truly was the will of God.
May God grant peace and comfort to the family.
Noma was a beautiful lady inside and out! She will be truly missed! I remember when I met Norma while dating her son Ronnie. Just so welcoming and just so genuine. She is now our angel watching over us. We love and miss you Norma!
