Patrick Joseph McCann

patrick mccann
Patrick McCann died Monday, January 10 from complications following aortic surgery. He was cherished as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, coach, and friend. His greatest joys in life were his wife of 50 years, Barbara; his children Erin (François), Dora, and Brendan (Sarah); and his grandchildren Sebastien, Caroline, Camille, and Madison.

Pat graduated from Ithaca College (BS) and Cornell University (MBA). He met Barbara in Chicago while in VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). He was a senior analyst at the Congressional Budget Office and Chief Clerk of the U.S. Senate Transportation Committee before founding McCann Capitol Advocates, a transportation lobbying firm. His recognized expertise in transportation policy and funding and the budget process garnered the respect of members of both political parties. He was a mentor to many, sharing his knowledge and advice with wisdom and humor. After retirement, Pat loved tending his orchids, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Pat lived his life with grace and love. He will be remembered for his smile, wonderful sense of humor, unfailing positive attitude, his warmth, and his generosity and kindness. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness.” Patrick's life and soul were things of beauty. He will be greatly missed. Viewing at Money & King Funeral Home, Vienna, VA will take place on Friday, January 14, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church in McLean, VA at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 15

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Hundreds of happy memories shared with Pat’s family over forty years of friendship. Selecting one seems impossible. But Pat loved orchids and knew all about them caring for them meticulously in his greenhouse. And so he was my orchid doctor returning my ailing plants blooming as brightly as his smile. Forever a living memory of a treasured friend.

  2. We will all miss Pat so much. He was always such a warm, positive, insightful force in the neighborhood and at our parties and dinners. He had an amazing memory and a vast political knowledge and intuitiveness. He and Barbara were always the first to open their house for entertaining, and were welcoming to all. We will miss you; may you rest in peace now. Julie and Joe Warin

  3. Pat was a dear friend who will be sorely missed. He was fun to be with whether we were lost on dirt roads seeking wild horses in the Pryor Mountains of Wyoming or fishing on pristine lakes in Montana. He was so funny that you’d laugh uncontrollably. He was brave, generous and fair minded . When we coached the 6 year old boys “Orange Crush” soccer team, he insisted that everyone play the same length of time – even our own kids. He was an ideal person to travel with. He was not a “ complainer”. Kate and I will forever treasure the beautiful, funny times we shared with Pat and Barbara. Jerry Mikszewski

  4. As long-time employees at the Congressional Budget Office, we had the privilege of working with Pat when he worked there (from 1977 to 1983) and/or when he later served as a Senate staffer. He was a wise, skilled, and knowledgeable professional, patient and imperturbable under pressure. As a colleague, he was gentle, kind, and good-humored, a delight to work with and be with. Our hearts go out to Barbara and the family. Bob Sunshine, Teri Gullo, Kathy Gramp, and Jodi Capps
