Penelope Ann Smith
December 29, 1950 ~ June 8, 2022
Penny was a loving mother and a gracious host, opening her home to all without judgement. She treated all of her sons' friends as if they were part of the family, and always offered everything from dinner to kind words and needed advice because giving, no matter what it was, is what made her truly happy. She made everyone feel safe, loved, cared for and protected at home and in her career as a nurse to a countless number of patients she saw over the years. Penny will be truly missed. She is survived by her two sons, Jesse and Tucker Barstow and her two daughters-in-law Chantel and Kristen Barstow. The world lost one of the kindest human beings but heaven gained one for eternity. We love you. Relatives and friends are invited to Penny's Life Celebration at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, VA on Saturday, June 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ARCH a cause Penny was very passionate about. https://archfund.org/

Penny a professional friend and associate for nearly 40 years and our Nursing Co-Administrator for 10. Her sincere kindness and true interest in each of her co-workers we will always treasure. Jesse and Tucker – we knew you through your mother, she was so proud of you and of her daughter-in-laws. Shared pictures of weddings and that great trip together. Penny is a reproductive health hero, making a difference is what she did every day in her professional life as well as in her personal life. Penny, where do I begin. An inspirational woman. Incredible mother. Amazing friend. Dedicated Nurse. A dynamic maverick. A fierce soul that never gave up for anything. She will always be family. From our many mini sessions to the impromptu watching of our first Grand Prix race during our ACN convention in St. Pete’s. To our unconditional love for dogs especially the bully breeds, Bucket & Cleo-We love you always! My heart is grateful of the countless memories & time of having an exceptional woman to call a friend. Fate blessed my life & many others with Penelope. And this world is not the same without her, she lives on through everyone she touched-family, friends, colleagues, & patients. Penny you will be honored today & always. Love you endlessly <3

I met Penny in 1978. We were young women with a passionate fervor for reproductive rights. I hired her to work first in my Ft Lauderdale clinic and then later in my Maryland office. She was the administrator of my clinic that was bombed. We supported NARAL and NAF and NCAP. We went to marches in Washington, DC. We held the hands of women faced with an unwanted pregnancy. She introduced me to my husband and the father of my children. We have a history both personal and professional. Our children were playmates in their young days. I am grateful that I had a chance to spend time with her a week before she died. I brought her her favorite sandwich-a Reuben. We laughed and cried and said our goodbyes. She is deep in a pocket of my soul and will always be a part of me.
Penny was a great friend , my friend . Many memories were made back in our home town of Plainfield ,IL , through Florida and continuing on in Virginia. We shared many friends , many laughs . Penny was always there to support whatever crazy ideas we had , or crazy things we did , she will truly be missed by many. Rest in Peace , Bob Borello
