Robert M. Weiss

robert weiss
Robert Marshall "Bob" Weiss was born on February 28, 1943 in Abington, PA to William and Elizabeth Weiss. Bob grew up as an only child in the Philadelphia suburbs and attended Abington High School where he played in the marching band and met his future wife Diane. He graduated in 1961 and he and Diane both attended Penn State University. They were married in 1965, the same year Bob graduated with a bachelor's degree in mineral economics.

Following college, Bob served in the United States Army Reserves from 1966 to 1972. During that time, Bob and Diane moved to California and he pursued graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley. While in California, he worked part-time for the Western Pacific Railroad, which further enhanced his lifelong love for trains and train travel.

Bob move back to the east coast in 1972 and began a long career with the federal government in several capacities, including at the Department of Energy and Central Intelligence Agency. He retired in 2000.

In his later years, Bob fell in love with short wave and ham radios. He received numerous accolades in that hobby, including among many others, awards for speaking with fellow radio enthusiasts in over 180 different countries. Bob also had a passion for classical music and regularly traveled the country to hear his favorite symphonies and operas performed.

Bob was also a big college basketball fan, and his passing as our first March Madness in two years began means that for the first time in decades, he would not fill out brackets as the games went on, carefully keeping record of each winner and score as the tournament progressed.

Bob is survived by his wife of 56 years, Diane, his daughter Laura, his son Jamie, daughter-in-law Amanda and two grandchildren, Brennan and Logan.

His wish was to be cremated and have his ashes placed at his family's summer home in Lake George. New York.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Capital Caring Health, Halquist Center, 4715 15th St. N., Arlington, Va 22205.
