A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Sally Hanger Moravitz of Falls Church, VA passed away peacefully at home amongst family Friday, July 16, 2021. Sally was a lifelong learner, modern dancer, choreographer, educator, serial volunteer in the arts and education, choir member, and amateur naturalist.

Sally was born September 8, 1933, in Lexington, VA. Sally earned a B.S. degree from Mary Washington College (now UMW) and a Master of Arts from George Washington University. She also received advanced study in modern dance and stagecraft at the Connecticut College School of Dance with dance icons Doris Humphrey, Martha Graham, Jose Limon and Louis Horst, as well as graduate work at UCLA. Sally started her professional career as a teaching member of the faculty for five years at the University of Georgia.

In 1960, Sally left her teaching position at the University of Georgia to marry Francis (Fran) Moravitz, who she had met in high school. Sally and Fran had been married for 61 years at the time of her death. Fran and Sally raised three sons in Falls Church Virginia. Later in life, she was active in many educational, civic, theatrical, and liturgical events. Sally was the founder of the Mary-Michael Dancers who performed as a part of a Concerts in the Schools program for ten years and was a choreographer for several theater productions including the Adventure Theater and the Reston Players. Sally was also active in her alumni organization at UMW, sang in her church choir, was a member of the Sacred Dance Guild, passionate about marine life on the Chesapeake Bay, and a 31-year docent at the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum’s Insect Zoo.

She is survived by her husband Francis of Falls Church, VA, and son Brian (Denise) of Warrenton, VA; son Vic (Micki) of Reston, VA; and son Michael of Fairfax, VA; and five grandchildren, Madeline, Jay, Claire, Nathan, and Nicole.

  1. Sally was an amazing woman whom I admired over the many years I worked for Fran at the Appalachian Regional Commission. I am so sorry to have read that the world has lost her. My condolences to Fran.

  2. Sally was a dedicated volunteer at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s Insect Zoo for 31 years. I loved seeing Sally each and every Thursday before she retired in 2018.
