Susan “Sue” Janis Sladek, 71, went home to be with the Lord on May 6, 2019 after passing away from natural causes.

Sue was born March 25, 1948 in Aurora, IL, the third of five children and first daughter of Henry and Gloria (Kleiber) Sladek. She spent her childhood living in Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, and eventually, Virginia. She was a 1965 graduate of Bentley High School in Livonia, MI, and a 1969 graduate of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

Sue was a long-time federal employee of the Environmental Protection Agency and enjoyed discussing the happenings of Washington, D.C. circles with her friends and family. She was an excellent conversationalist and had a remarkable memory for the tiniest details of U.S. history and contemporary issues.

Sue loved sewing, traveling, reading, and quilting. She was known by her family and friends as an excellent quilter and often made quilts for her grand-nieces and nephews on the occasion of their birth. She was a member of several quilting organizations and continued her passion for quilting until the end of her days. One of Sue’s favorite annual pastimes was visiting the famous cherry blossom trees at the National Mall in D.C. at daybreak each spring. She loved to take her chair or blanket, cup of coffee, and enjoy the serenity and peace offered by the cherry blossom trees. She continued the tradition each year, last sharing beautiful pictures of the cherry blossoms in April 2019.

Sue will be remembered for her honesty, sweet demeanor, joyful social demeanor, volunteerism, and commitment to inclusion. She enjoyed hosting family and friends in her Virginia home and sharing her expert knowledge of the DC area. A member of Vienna Presbyterian Church, Sue dedicated her life to Jesus and was committed to His word through Bible study, church activities, planning retreats, and small groups.

Sue is survived by her brothers Larry (Louise) Sladek, Steve (Dana) Sladek, and sister Marianne Sladek. She will be greatly missed by her beloved nieces and nephews Corey Gorgon, Lauren (Jeff) Nehlsen, Jonathan (Alyssa) Gorgon, Daniel (Abby) Sladek, Nikki Gorgon, Nicholas Robb, and Thomas Sladek, as well as numerous cousins, great-nieces and nephews, extended family and wonderful friends.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Gloria Sladek; her brother, Arthur Sladek; and various aunts, uncles, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Sue to one of the following charities:
