Fairfax, Virginia - On May 6, 2020 Verna R. Morres went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She passed into his hands peacefully at her home in Fairfax, Virginia attended by loving members of her family.

She was born Verna Elvittia Roberts on December 17, 1931 in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. In her youth she excelled in academics and music. She mastered piano and won statewide competitions and recognition playing saxophone in her high school band. Following graduation from High School in 1949 she sought employment in Carson City, Nevada where she would reside for the next 25 years

It was in Carson City where she met and married World War II Navy veteran Mr. Ross Morres on March 16, 1951. While in Carson City, she held administrative positions with the First National Bank of Nevada, the Nevada National Guard US Property and Fiscal Office (USPFO) and the Office of the Adjutant General. She also held positions with the school district hot lunch program and managed cafeteria services at Fremont Elementary School.

The primary focus of her life was always her family, particularly the upbringing and education of her four children. She stressed academic excellence with her children, three of whom went on to have University and Graduate degrees. She insisted they learn to play piano and participate in school band and local athletic activities. In support of these she took on a variety of roles contributing to Carson City youth baseball programs, the Carson Swim Club and serving the Girl Scouts of America as a Brownie Troop Leader. She was a lifetime member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority with chapters in Nevada and Virginia.

In June 1974 she moved with her family to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area when her husband accepted a position as a civil rights specialist with the National Guard Bureau. She would reside in Virginia for the remaining 46 years of her life serving for twenty years as a Legal Secretary for the Department of the Army at the Pentagon and in Falls Church, Virginia. During this time she received numerous awards and accolades for exceptional leadership, and meritorious service for her legal work with the US Army.

Mrs. Morres was revered and loved by family and friends for her warm and gentle character and for her unwavering kindness and welcoming nature. She hosted friends and family in her home for holiday and special events with loving arms always making others feel comfortable and special. Others turned to her for comfort and wise advice in times of trouble. Her children’s friends knew her as the Mom of the neighborhood as she made each one feel they were one of her own. Her bright and beautiful smile augmented by her fiery red hair lit up every room she entered. Never did a harsh word cross her lips, nor did she ever overlook an opportunity to help a friend or offer a word of encouragement or a loving embrace when words alone were not enough.

Her faith and love of her savior Jesus Christ was deep and profound. She was a devoted member of the Way of Faith Assembly of God Church in Fairfax, and the Senior Social Group the Evergreen’s. She played piano for Sunday evening services until her health forced her to remain at home. However, she continued to follow her church family on-line. She is preceded in death by her husband and one grand son and survived by four children, ten grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by an older sister, a younger brother and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be inurned at National Memorial Park, Falls Church, Virginia
