Alfonso Eduardo Vayra, 61, of Fairfax, died suddenly and unexpectedly in a car accident on Sunday, July 7, after a day spent sailing on the Chesapeake Bay.
An avid musician, Alfonso shared his love of music with family, friends, and anyone he met with a kindred passion for the Beatles. A self-taught musician, he played the guitar and taught his son to play the drums. He was happiest while on the Chesapeake Bay sailing his beloved boat, Imagine.
Born in Argentina, Alfonso came to the United States in 1979 and became a proud citizen thereafter. For the past 25 years he worked for Fairfax County, most recently in the Department of Transportation. Throughout his tenure, he was recognized with outstanding achievement awards and certifications that included an Outstanding Performance Award, a Champion Award for Distinguished Service in the Area of Innovation, a Certificate of Appreciation for his work on the McConnell Public Safety and Transportation Operations Center, and a Department Award recognizing his outstanding achievements for his handling of capital projects and grants.
His parents were Fany Noemi Balmaceda and Tomas Francisco Vayra. He is survived by his son, Fabricio, daughter-in-law, Melissa, two granddaughters, Emilia and Eva, and two brothers Roberto and Miguel.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate his life during a visitation on Friday, July 26 from 6-8pm at Money & King Funeral Home 171 W. Maple Avenue, Vienna, VA.
