Allen E. Taylor, 97, one of the pioneers in the American Aviation industry, passed away on December 19, 2009 at Williamsburg Landing in Williamsburg, Virginia. Allen- or "Pappy" as his professional colleagues affectionatly called him- enjoyed a career in the airline industry that spanned five decades, from the early 1930's into the mid 1970's. He was one of the few remaining original members of American Airlines' Three Diamond Society, then American Airways' first group of employees. Mr. Taylor's aviation career path then took him into air traffic control with the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA), which ultimately became today's Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). He served as center chief at Chicago's Midway Airport & subsequently chief of the Leesburg Center for both Washington National (now Ronald Reagan International) & Dulles International Airports. Subsequently, he was the FAA's representative at air shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic states. Two of the holding points over Lake Michigan for aircraft waiting to land in the Chicago area were, in fact, named "Pappy" & "Taylor" by a former flight standards team there.

Mr. Taylor was born in Hazel Dell, Illinois on May 15, 1912. He was a longtime resident of Vienna, Virginia & was actively involved in his community. He was a member of Oakton United Methodist Church & was a valued memeber of the Vienna (host) Lions Club for 41 years.

Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Roberta Caroline Schalk of St. Louis, Missouri, as well as his brother Paul Taylor & his sister Inez Elliott. He is survived by his son Keith Allen Taylor & his wife Carol, of Williamsburg, Virginia; grandchildren Bradley & Jennifer Taylor of Bowling Green, Kentucky, David & Allison Taylor of Haymarket, Virginia & Bryan Taylor of Arlington, Virginia, as well as great-grandchildren Peyton, Braxton, Parker & Grace.

  1. My Grandfather was a truly incredible man who had many friends. Everyone whoever met him, loved him all due in part to the fact that he was a man of great pride, integrity and generosity. I know this from having know him for 37 years. I am truly blessed to have had him as my Grandfather and will miss him deeply. Please keep my Dad and brothers in your thoughts as I know too that they miss him as much as I do and feel exactly the same way. Rest in Peace Grandpa, I will miss you, love you very much but am most happy that you get to see your wonderful wife, my Grandmother again after all of these years. Love, Bryan

He lit up the Lions Club meetings with his smile and genuine interest in everyone. I hope there’s a table of Lions in Heaven who’ll make him feel right at home. Joe and Nancy

Revelations 21:4 speaks of a time when sorrow will be a thing of the past. I hope this message brings you a measure of hope. Please take care of yourselves. Sincerely

  7. Dear Keith and family, We are so sorry for your loss. Just learned of your Father/ Grandfather passing. What a very special man he was. We feel so privileged to have known him and have him as a neighbor for all those years we lived in Vienna Woods. He will be remembered with much love. Our deepest sympathy. Drew and Carol Gardner and Family

  8. Keith, In 2005 I had the opportunity to visit Pappy in Williamsburg, VA. I went to the desk and got his room number and preceded to Pappy’s door and knocked on the door. Before I got the second knock in I heard “It’s open” in that deep but kind voice. Pappy’s door was always open. What a fine gentleman. My condolences to you and your family.

  9. I will never forget growing up next to Allen. When he came home from work, all the kids would run to greet him and he would bend his head down and let us run our hands over his flat top. At Halloween, there were always special treats for the kids on the circle. He was a kind and loving man and will be missed by everyone who knew him. Mom is recovering from a broken leg and is at the Virginian for rehab, otherwise she would have been at the funeral. You are all in our prayers.
