I had never met Carleton, but had heard a lot about him over the years from my mother and sister. I will be thinking of you, and am so sorry for your loss!
Val, I wish I could be there to see my favorite cousin one more time. Will see you this summer sometime. Hope to see all of you then. Love, Burneil
I met Carleton about 1944 when we were teenagers in Washington, D.C. He was on the Ambassador Hotel Swimming Team, as was myself and his brother, Stanley. I remember both of them well. I was quite impressed with Carlton as a swimmer and being a Capitol Page. I recall often competing with them in swimming meets. I believe the last time I saw Carlton was about 1965 when he worked for the National Park Service at Haines Point. Very sorrow to learn of his illness and passing. I would hope to attend the service on Thrusday, but if not, rest assured that my thoughts will be with the family.
Val (and family), I hope to get to the visitation on Wed. night, but the weather is not cooperating at all. I enjoyed my visits with Carleton and family over the years when I was in the DC area on business. He always went out of his way to ensure we had a great time. Hearing mom’s stories about her cousin’s visits as a kid and in recent years when you visited her in Iowa has made me feel like I knew you both perhaps better than I do. Know that if I can’t make it to the service, you’ll be in my thoughts. Janeen Johnson
I consider myself very fortunate to have known such a kind and patient man as “Tink”. Both he and Valerie were very tolerant of the “music” we provided them with when Larry, Craig, myself and others rehearsed in their basement. They were always very supportive of our efforts. The kindness he showed me will never be forgotten. I think of both of them often as I drive by their home every day on my way home from work. He will surely be missed by many of us. My love and prayers are with Valerie and Larry at this sad time. Joni Nixon
