Carol Priscilla Freiberger Van Lengen November 21, 2020 Carol Priscilla Freiberger Van Lengen, 98, peacefully passed away on November 21, 2020 in Great Falls, Virginia. Carol's life was distinguished by her generosity and care of others, both within her family and extending to the larger community, where she contributed to many Boards and volunteered her time to several organizations including, Planned Parenthood, The Junior League of Syracuse, The New York State Commission for the Blind and the League of Women Voters. She fervently believed in the power of education to be a transformative experience for all citizens and generously contributed to many academic institutions. Born in Syracuse, New York, on Christmas day 1921, Carol was the daughter of Priscilla Braun Freiberger and Jacob F. Freiberger, owner of the Onondaga Silk Company and a founder of The Prosperity Company in Syracuse, New York. She graduated from Emma Willard School, and received her BFA from Syracuse University. After working with the PN Braun Company in Syracuse, Carol received her business degree from Radcliffe College/Harvard University. In 1949, she married Robert Warner Van Lengen, a prominent Syracuse attorney and a well-known college football referee, who passed away in 1995. In the early years of her marriage, she designed and marketed children's clothing. She then raised five children in a home that she had designed, signifying her long term interest in the power of architecture to shape our lives. She later completed an MFT in Marriage and Family Counseling which she practiced for several years until her retirement in 1980. She moved to Venice, Florida from 1998-2018, before her final move to Northern Virginia to be closer to her family. She is survived by four children, Dorli Bokel (John Bokel) of Reston, Virginia, Karen Van Lengen (Jim Welty) of Charlottesville, Virginia, Kris Van Lengen (Dianne Lewis) of Waynesboro, Virginia, and Lori Klatt (Arvid Klatt), of Buffalo, Minnesota; 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Her son Philip Van Lengen died in 1985 in Syracuse, New York. She leaves a large extended family with the memory that a life well lived is a balance of personal and community ambitions that together build a more equitable and democratic culture. In lieu of flowers the family asks that any contributions be made in Carol's name to The Emma Willard School that she so loved and cherished for so much of her life. Services private. 1. So sorry to hear of your loss. My parents, sister and I lived on Cambridge St. in Syracuse, NY for many years, and were neighbors with Leonora and Marion Finck. They were WONDERFUL people, and we were so close with them. As young kids, my sister and I used to love going to their house. And, like Marion, we both became teachers in the Syracuse School District. We will always remember those delicious Christmas cookies! I can still picture each of those cookies, now! Such special memories of these ladies…. I also remember how much they loved your family. They talked about all of you, all of the time. The stories were all wonderful, and they were so proud to be part of the family. We always felt like we knew all of you. Again, my sister and I send our thoughts and condolences to your family. Carol was certainly a special lady!!

  2. Carol and Bob sat next to us at the SU football games years ago. We had many lively conversations when the games got boring. It was so fun to see Bob down on the field as a referee. Carol loved him so dearly. In One Peace, Sharye Skinner Cazenovia NY
