Carole Jean Jones
October 10, 1936 ~ January 27, 2023
Carole Jean Jones passed away on January 27, 2023 after a 10 plus year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Carole was born in Berwick, PA on October 10, 1936 to Fred and Edith Hampel. She was thrilled when her baby brother, John, and baby sister Mariellen were born. Carole was a lifelong cheerleader starting at Berwick High School. As an adult she continued to cheer on her late husband Merlyn R. Jones and her surviving children David and Diane. She kept everyone motivated and excited about their various activities. She helped Merl stay organized with his sports interests, ensured that Diane got to scout activities, flute lessons and softball games and Dave to his basketball, soccer and baseball games. She also participated in various community activities, helping to run events at the local pool and organize neighborhood block parties. Carole loved sports. She played basketball in high school and took up bowling and golf as an adult. She also loved to attend college sporting events, like Penn State football and Maryland Basketball. There was no fight song or sporting event that she didn’t love. She was a breast cancer survivor who spearheaded golfing fundraisers in her later years at Penn National Golf Club in Fayetteville, PA, Merl and Carole’s beloved community for over 20 years.
Carole and Merl met in Berwick and were married for 56 years at the time of Merl’s death in 2013. Before they moved to the DC area for career opportunities, Carole had started her higher education at Beaver College. After they moved, she completed her English degree at night at the University of Maryland while working as a cryptologist at the National Security Agency. While raising her children in New Carrollton, MD she worked as a substitute teacher. She then worked for Arbitron and then settled in on a long career at Unisys in Northern Virginia before accepting a transfer to work in the corporate training department at their headquarters in Blue Bell, PA.
Carole grew up in Berwick, PA and together Carole and Merl lived in Arlington, VA, New Carrollton, MD, Lower Gwynedd, PA and Fayetteville, PA. Along the way they met many friends who they reminisce fondly about in their later years. Their best friends for life, Kay and Fred
Stout were a constant in their life as they celebrated many holidays and vacations together.
Survivors are her children Dave (Margot) of Vienna, VA. Diane Jones of Harpers Ferry, WV. Her beloved grandsons David (Katy) Jones of Centreville, VA and Treanor (Matney) of Charleston, SC. Her great grandchildren Lily and Penelope. Her brother John Hampel and (Linda) her sister Mariellen (Ray) Robertson. Sister-in-laws Kay Stout and Barabara Cecil. Donations in Carole’s name to Alzheimer’s Association to help end this terrible disease. We lost the best of Carole many years ago to this terrible disease and are comforted knowing she is in heaven with her memory intact.

Carole was a great big cousin to Judy. She and Merle were so welcoming when we moved to the DC area.

We are so sad about Carole’s passing. We had such good times with Carole and Merle and families at our house or Jonestown!
She will be missed but know that she and Merle have a lot to get caught up on!! As you know we went through all this with our Mom too! It is heartbreaking to watch. We will not be able to come to funeral but will look forward to seeing all of you when you come to Berwick! Take care and know we are thinking of you! Pat and Donnie
