Charles Wolf Sloan (born August 7, 1938)

Chuck died at home in Vienna, VA on July 7, 2015 with Daphne, his dearly loved wife and companion in all adventures, at his side. He is survived by his four children Mary Margaret (husband Dr Howard Krum), Charles Jr (wife Dr Mastidia K Rutaihwa ), Burton (wife Melissa Tobin), and Susannah, plus five grandchildren (Julien, Andre, Romeo, Carambola, and Esperanza). His family and friends will miss his twinkle and his certainty that every day would be a great day. Chuck was an attorney in Vienna for almost 50 years, and, when not hiking, playing the piano, or enjoying the National Symphony, he volunteered his time and legal expertise at more than a dozen local, national, and international nonprofit organizations, including Appalachian Trail Conservancy, American Hiking Society, Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, and Joe Gibb's Youth For Tomorrow. He founded and chaired the Boards of the Tanzania Education Fund and the Nianjema Medical Clinic, 107 Pleasant St NW Vienna, VA. 22180, and so, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of these two causes. Relatives and friends may call at the Sloan home, 223 Walnut Lane NW, Vienna, VA 22180 on July 10th from 3-7 p.m. The service and a reception immediately following will be on July 11th at 11a.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 9970 Vale Rd, Vienna, VA.

  1. Daphne and family. What a very sad day it is for you and your family. I will always remember his smile and his kindness when he helped me in a time in my life when I needed someone. The Town will miss him, as will all of his friends. Such a wonderful caring person he was. It was a privilege to know him. Stay strong and take comfort knowing he did not suffer for a long period of time.

  3. We will always treasure the fun times, all the memories of the movies, dinners, hiking in France, praying together, laughing, singing as Chuck played the piano, his legal expertise, making the school a reality with him, and especially his support and prayers for us. We had fun, laughter and comraderie with both of you, Daphne, and we will be ever grateful for his goodness and his presence in our lives.

  4. Chuck and I became friends as members of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters. I’ll remember him for his warmth and commitment to the communities he served. He was an extraordinary guy. I’m honored to have known him. All the best to the family.

  5. Chuck was a true original. The world is diminished without his physical presence but his indomitable spirit endures.

  6. Chuck Sloan How do I describe him? So many words come to mind. A gentleman, a gentle man. Kind, generous, thoughtful. A family man, loving, caring husband, father, and grandfather. Trusts in God. Witty, humorous, lover of puns and other plays upon words. Musician. Gamesman. Curious, adventurous, hiker of towpaths and mountaintops because they are there. Lawyer. Mentor. Patron of good works. Intelligent. Intellectual. Independent. Dreamer, realist. Inspiration. A Renaissance Man. Optimist. Good friend. Gone too soon. Wally Mack

  7. My genuine condolences. What a shame that our complex society prevented my getting notice of this. Chuck and Daphne were true friends. Chuck will be missed

  8. Chuck was a member of the Board of the Alzheimer’s Family Day Center (now Insight Memory Care) for a few years. Those of us on the Board with him remember him as a thoughtful, caring, and funny man. Our sympathies go out to his family.

  9. I am so happy to have known Mr Sloan for over 30 some years Being a member of First Baptist and my parents In-Laws all knew him. Even though he is not with us he is in greater place now My prayers and love to all of the family He was a very kind sweet man I will always remember his kindness to me God be with you all 🙏🏻❤️

  10. To the Family of Charles “Chuck” Sloan – I was deeply saddened to learn of Chuck’s death on July 7 from the Law School. Chuck and I went through St. Joseph College and over that seven year period. Chuck was a gentle and humble fellow and a good friend over those years. I recall talking with him not too long before our 50th year anniversary and his plan to attend that party. Possibly his absence had something to do with his illness. My regret is that I never contacted him on any of my visits to my daughter’s family when they lived in Annandale. I promised Chuck I would do that, but regretfully it either escaped my mind or other matters took control. My prayers are with you and Chuck.

  11. I had the pleasure of getting to know Chuck while we attended Villanova Law School. He was always so cheerful and witty. I particularly recall his piano playing skills. He was a good entertainer. May he rest in peace.
