Christine Marie Evert
December 2, 1950 ~ July 23, 2023
Chris passed away after a 3-week battle with a particularly aggressive form of adenocarcinoma.
Chris was born and raised in Marquette, Michigan in a house overlooking Lake Superior. She was the fourth of five children born to Ted and Jeannette Bernard. Her parents were both musicians and their home was always filled with music.
Chris attended Bauder College and Northern Michigan University. In 1971, she moved to the Washington D.C. area where she met her husband, Raymond Evert, while on a ski trip. In 1974, they married in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. They moved to McLean, Virginia in 1975 where they lived for the last 48 years. She had two children, Devin (Barbara) Evert of Falmouth, ME, and Leah Evert of Washington, DC.
Chris (like her more famous namesake) loved playing tennis and played at least twice a week at the McLean Racquet and Health Club beginning in 1981. It is here where she made many of her closest friendships. She also was a voracious reader and was often called on by friends for book recommendations. In addition, she enjoyed biking and kayaking and later in life took up golf and pickle ball.
Chris had many jobs both with the federal government and with private industry. Her last job, which she held for the past 15 years, was as a case manager for older adults and people with disabilities. She loved dogs and volunteered for a group providing adoption services for golden retrievers, and was a talented cook and baker.
Chris had a zest for life and was fortunate to experience some world travel later in life. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by two grandchildren, Sawyer and Alana Evert of Falmouth, ME, as well as two brothers, Robert Bernard and Edward Bernard, of Michigan.
Chris was loved by many and will be greatly missed. A celebration of her life will be held on September 20, 2023, beginning at 5 pm at The Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, VA.
Any contributions in her name should be made to The Willow Foundation, an organization that raises money for advanced cancer research, co-founded by her daughter, Leah.
