Cidny B Fox

Oakton, Virginia -- Cidny B Fox, a long-time resident of the Oakton area, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 16, 2019, surrounded by family, after a nearly 5-year long fight against ovarian cancer.

Born on July 12, 1958 in Houston, Texas, Cidny was the beloved daughter of Thomas J Banwell Sr. (who preceded Cidny in death at age 90) and Mildred Banwell (age 89). When Cidny was just a little girl, the Banwell family relocated to southern California, where Cidny spent all of her childhood and school age years. Cidny went to Claremont High School and then went on to attend Pomona College. Cidny was known by all as being remarkably bright and a talented swimmer. She continued her education at the University of Washington, where she obtained a degree in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics.

At the University of Washington, Cidny met her future husband, Michael D Fox. They met collecting tickets at a Huskies football game, the day after Cidny had her wisdom teeth removed. It was still love at first sight. Cidny and Mike married on July 5, 1980, and were about to celebrate 39 years of sweet marriage. They enjoyed living on the "Left Coast" together, abroad in Germany, and then on the "Right Coast" when they finally settled in the Northern Virginia area in 1990.

Cidny served in the Army Medical Service Corps, both on Active Duty and in the Reserves. She was one of the first women to graduate Airborne School in 1982, earned her Parachutist Badge, and also earned her Sharpshooter Qualification Badge. Both in the Army and then as a civilian, Cidny excelled in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics. She was a highly respected practitioner, with area doctors sending her the most complicated patients, and was also a nationally known instructor and contributor to the field through writing and patient research.

Cidny loved serving and protecting others, and she was a fierce advocate for her patients and anyone with medical needs. She had a passion for life that was unparalleled. She was a certified personal trainer and delighted in helping others learn how to take care of, and truly love, their bodies. She was an endurance athlete, a passionate runner and marathoner, and in her later years became an avid speed skater. She loved the thrill of any good race and was a natural competitor.

Cidny had a wit and charm about her; her personality drew everyone in and her joy for life was contagious. Cidny was most passionate about her faith in Christ- it was the true source of her strength and what drove her fighting spirit. Even after being diagnosed with cancer, Cidny never slowed down and fought hard until the end, defying all the odds and never ceasing to praise God along the way.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was a blessing to her siblings Tom Banwell Jr, Carrie (Banwell) Gronewald, Marilyn (Banwell) Stanley, and James Banwell. She is survived by her two children, Jeffrey Fox (and spouse Shannon Fox), and Julie (Fox) Chittock (and spouse Andrew Chittock). She was a grandmother ("Lulu") to Adam (5), Milo (3), Jesse (3), Sloane (in heaven), Clementine "Emmy" (18 months), and Selene (5 months). She is also survived by a large extended family and many close friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 20th, 2019 at 1 P.M. at Redeeming Grace Church, 5200 Ox Rd, Fairfax, VA 22030.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Globe-athon in Cidny's honor. She was passionate about this amazing organization and their fight to end women's cancers everywhere. She loved being an advocate for research in the area of women's cancers!
