David A. Edwards

On Thursday, February 17, 2011 of Reston, VA died at Reston Hospital Center after a courageous battle against cancer. He was a husband, father, grandfather and a great-grandfather, as well as a tireless community activist. He was born May 26, 1937 in Canton, OH to Carmen Harper Edwards and Eleanor Ayres Edwards Temple. After receiving a Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University, he joined the U.S. Navy serving his country for three years. After graduate studies at Miami University, Oxford, OH, he received his Master's degree in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
In 1964, he married Abigail Carroll of Cincinnati, Ohio. They moved to northern Virginia in 1966 before making Reston their home in 1967. In Reston, they raised their four children.
David served Northern Virginia as the Executive Director of the Fairfax County Economic Development Council which he held for twelve years. He retired from Washington Gas in 2002 after sixteen years.
In his retirement, he occupied his time travelling the world with his wife and being a grandfather to his eight grandchildren and one great grandson. The bulk of his retirement was spent volunteering his time, intellect and energy to the improvement of the Reston community, Fairfax County, and Washington Dulles Airport. He served in numerous capacities in twenty organizations, including the Committee for Dulles, Washington Airports Task Force, Fairfax County Chamber, Loudoun County Chamber, Dulles Area Transportation Association, Fairfax Committee of 100, and the Northern Virginia Economic Development Coalition, of which he was a founding member. He was also instrumental in the construction of the Reston Community Center.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Robert and his stepfather, Benjamin Howard Temple.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, daughter, Julie, of Charlotte, NC; sons and daughters-in-laws, Bobby and Stephanie, of Smithfield, VA; Brian and Michele, of Waynesboro, VA; March and Tressa, of Langhorne, PA; his grandchildren, Jacqueline and her partner Kirk; Chelsea, Carly, Isaac, Morgan, Hunter, Olivia, and Saige; his great grandson, Konner and his aunt, Dr. Loraine Edwards, of West Lafayette, IN, as well as numerous colleagues and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston on March 12 at 2pm. Inurnment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society and the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston capital campaign.
