David Briggs Ballard

David Briggs Ballard, 87, passed away peacefully at Sunrise Assisted Living Home, Vienna, VA on Ssturday January 28, 2012. He was born in Shelbyville, Indiana on August 29 1924 to Burnett Hiram and Rebecca Briggs Ballard. David was predeceased by his beloved wife, Annabel; sister, Elizebeth Anne Johnson and brother, Ray Benjamin Ballard. He is survived by three children, Patricia Ballard Kendrick, St. Charles IL, Guy Jeffery Johnson, Bowie, MD and Gail Jennifer Lussier, Vienna, Va and six grandchildren, Adrienne, David, and Emily Johnson, Bowie, MD, Jacob, Jessica, and Devon Lussier, Vienna VA. After graduation from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & College of Engineering, David was employed3 as a metallurgist by the National Bureau of Standards for over 35 years. Subsequent to retirement he worked for several more years as a consultant continuing his scientific research and use of the scanning electron microsope. He also made time for his avid interest in restoration of music boxes and player piano rolls, design stained glass windows and mineral micro mounting. David was a long time member of the Gem and Lapidary Mineral Society and the Autoatic Musical Instrument Collectors' Association. He was a decorated vetran of W.W.II serving in the U.S. Army in the New Guinea; South Phillippines and Luzon campaigns.
