David W. Goewey

August 21, 1962 ~ December 29, 2013
David W. Goewey, age 51, passed away on December 29, 2013. David was the beloved husband of 26 years to Sarah Maddocks Goewey and the devoted father of Jack, Claire, and Sophie Goewey of Vienna, VA. He was the loving brother of Catherine Dalton (Lynchburg, VA) and Susan Goewey (Vienna) and uncle to 9 nieces and nephews. A partner at Venable, LLP, Dave joined the firm in 1987 soon after graduating from William & Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law, where he served as Executive Editor Research of the William & Mary Law Review. An athlete as well as a scholar, he served as editor of his high school newspaper at Jeb Stuart H.S. in Falls Church (class of 1980) where he also lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He attended the University of Virginia where he served as a Resident Advisor and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He graduated from UVA in 1984 after majoring in political science and economics. In his law career, David's colleagues and clients appreciated his ability to be "direct" and "get to the point." In his personal life, Dave was known for his wit, humor, creativity and appreciation of nature's beauty, as was reflected in his photography. He leaves a wide circle of friends and has the love and admiration of his extended family including the Honorable John W. Smith and Harriet of Raleigh, NC; the Maynards of Larchmont, NY; the Goeweys of Cincinnati, OH and the extended Maddocks family in the U.K. While his career as a litigator required long hours, he appreciated that it also enabled him to travel widely. He was devoted to his family and he rarely missed his children's sporting events. He stayed active himself and ran the New York and Marine Corps marathons and played in an adult soccer league. In recent years he was on a quest to take his family to visit the top national parks, among them the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion.

I have found comfort in this memory from one of my brother Dave’s best friends growing up, Pat Cribben: “Maybe something to hold on to could be that Dave has always seemed to me to have so much love around him. You guys just have a knack for that. I loved being around your family back then because of the authentic and unpretentious care that everyone seemed to have for one another. Not facile or pro forma, but fulsome and complicated and full of humor.”
I spoke with Dave at church a few times back in the years of Saint Nicholas parties when Sophie, Claire and Jack were in elementary school. He had a friendly smile and a welcoming manner, and I’m sorry I didn’t get to know him better. My thoughts are with you, Sarah. I can’t begin to imagine how hard this has been. I’ll be in touch. Love, Ruth
I can’t even begin or try to understand the loss you and your family are feeling. I read Susan’s comment and I believe that Dave has left a world of love around all of you and pray this will provide some comfort. Dave or as I always referred to him “Goewey” always did and still brings a smile to my heart. His passing reminds me to be a better friend and value one’s past. Again my deepest sorrow and prayers for your family.
I first met Dave when we lived in Tuttle our first year at UVa, and since that time I have always been envious of how damn good he was at everything and how funny he was. As he endured an inexorable decline in his health, I was humbled and amazed by his courage, strength and the love of Sarah and his family and friends. He will always be an inspiration to me- professionally and personally.

He was a modern man who cultivated all the ancient virtues: courage, wisdom, magnanimity, prudence, proportionality, and loyalty. Plus he was damned funny. We are all the poorer without him.
Your family are in our prayers. Our family has been greatly blessed by being a included in your family. We will always cherish the memories. God Bless you all. David Wanda Cummings Vass, NC
Our family was so sorry to learn of Dave’s passing. He was such a wonderful person, always a witty comment and kind word for everyone. He was Chris’ first soccer coach, a true role model for the boys. We will always remember him laughing and making everyone else join in when we met for dinner during spring break in Captiva. Our community is the poorer for his passing. We will be keeping your family in our prayers in these coming months. I’m sure Dave is proud of the wonderful wife and beautiful, gifted children that are his legacy here on earth. Love and Blessings, The Waltons (Kerry, Mike, Hayleigh & Christopher)
I can’t think of Dave without smiling. And my memories of Dave all include those around him laughing and smiling, too. Dave added so much to our community, and his impact will be felt by many for years and years to come. We’ll be keeping Dave and his family in our thoughts and prayers.
What a beautiful service today. Sarah, you were the picture of grace under pressure, and I am sure Dave would have loved to hear all the laughter your stories generated. I will miss seeing his smiling face at church and at the farmers market. Love and prayers for you and the children, Katherine
What a stirring trip down memory lane we experienced this past week. Sarah, Sophie, Claire, and Jack thank you for sharing Dave with the rest of us. It was a wonderful, laughter-filled, bumpy ride.
I may not have seen David for thirty years but he was one of my closet highschool friends. I have nothing but great memories of playing sports growing up with David. What a unique and talented and witty guy he was. My prayers go out to the family.Love, Jim Smith
This is late in coming, but I just learned of David’s passing. My deepest sympathies go out to David’s family and all of his friends and colleagues. David and I worked at Venable together for 17 years — until late 2012. I remember him as a thoughtful and witty guy who was a good lawyer and a lot of fun to talk to. I know that he is greatly missed.
I am so sorry for your family’s loss. David was a bright light for me when I worked at Venable as a first-year associate (95-96). He helped to make the long hours we put in on the Compaq and ITC cases bearable, and was the nicest senior attorney I met at the firm. Always willing to help out the new kids with a smile. The fact that he took paternity leave during busy litigation times speaks volumes about how important his family was to him. I hope you know that and can take comfort in it.
I am late here, having just learned of Dave’s passing. He was my Resident Adviser during my first year at UVA, and what a difference he made to me and to my college experience. He was so smart, funny and caring, and I’m sure many others have also sung Dave’s praises. I just wanted to add my condolences here. I will miss him.
