On September 3, 2024 Donald L. Shannon (Don) died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Vienna, Virginia, at the age of 92 after a battle with cancer.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Leo James and Mary (Lucille) Shannon; his brothers, Leonard and Richard (Rose) Shannon; and his grandson, Troy Compher.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Rosemary Shannon and their four children, Leo Shannon (Constance), Terri Compher (Thomas), Sherri Winnik (René), and Michael Shannon; their grandchildren, Kari Reedy (John), Sara Richards (Adam), Laura Sager (Wayne), Stephen Shannon, Christopher Winnik, Christina Shannon, Tara Magness (Sean) and Ashton Winnik (Luciux); great-grandchildren Lily, Ella, Matthew, William, Kaitlyn, Avery, Brady, Luke, Willow, Warren, Adam, Atraeus and Amaris. Don is also survived by his sister, Darlene Stack, as well as many nephews, nieces and friends around the world.
Don was the first child born to Leo and Lucille in Great Falls, Montana. He grew up in Montana and joined the Navy in 1952. While on leave in Washington DC, he met Rosemary at a roller skating rink in Virginia and they were married in 1956. As a Navy veteran, Don began his career with IBM. With their family continuing to grow, they moved to their new home in Vienna, VA. Don continued to work for IBM until he retired, mastering different specialties so his family could grow up in Vienna.
Don loved to travel and wanted his children to have different learning experiences. At first, family trips were in a station wagon across the country and then, he upgraded to a motor home. Every few years, Don would plan longer and longer trips around the United States to visit National Parks, family, and friends, creating life long memories.
Don and Rosemary were founding members of St. Mark Catholic Church in Vienna and very active in the church. Don served as an usher for many years. He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
