Douglas W. Swanson, Jr.
Douglas W. Swanson, Jr., age 72, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, January 5, 2018 at his home in Ashburn, Virginia after a long battle with cancer. Doug grew up in Sparta, New Jersey. In 1963 he matriculated at Cornell University on an NROTC Scholarship, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering and a Masters in Electrical Engineering. In the fall of 1964, he met his “Sweetiepie.” Doug and Sally were married in 1967, two days after they graduated from Cornell University. Doug later earned an M.B.A. from The American University.
As a Naval Officer on active duty from 1968 to 1973 and as a Federal Government Employee from 1973 to 1996, Doug worked as a nuclear propulsion engineer where he monitored and administered technical, construction, scheduler, and cost matters in connection with reactor plant fluid systems and reactor plant structure and radiation shielding for Naval nuclear powered surface ships. He also served as the Financial Representative of the Director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion at both Ingalls (Pascagoula, Mississippi) and Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia.
Upon his retirement from the government in 1996, Doug became a Managing Consultant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers Consulting. Later he became an IBM Senior/Managing Consultant until his retirement in 2007.
Doug is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sarah (Sally), their daughters Heather and husband Paul Vogt, and Kristen and husband Cullen Woehrle, and son James Ryan Swanson; five grandchildren, Calvin, Malcolm and Drake Woehrle, and Trevor and Emma Vogt; his sister Carol Henderson and husband Robert and brother Robert Swanson; and Sally’s twin sister Elizabeth Hall.
Together, Sally and Doug loved cruising and travelled to over 70 countries. He especially loved their time at their summer home in Crescent Beach, Niantic, Connecticut. Doug was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on April 14, 2018 at 11:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church, McLean, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory made be made to the American Cancer Society or Capital Caring Hospice in Virginia.
