Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Haller Guthrie

August 8, 1926 ~ November 3, 2013
Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Haller Guthrie, 87, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 in her residence in Ashburn, Virginia. She was a native of Garden City, New York and graduated with honors from Garden City High School in 1943. She attended Hood College in Frederick, Maryland and graduated in 1947 with a degree in Home Economics.
After college, she obtained a position with Vogue (Conde Nast) in New York City and worked as a Fashion Assistant for the Vogue Pattern Magazine. She worked there for five years, attending fashion shows in New York and Paris. The role included working with the Designers to decide which fashion ideas, accessories and colors would be displayed in the upcoming issues of the pattern magazine.
In June, 1952, she married William, whom she had met while on a blind date at a Naval Academy function during their college years. She immersed herself into the role of a Naval Officer's wife, joining the Naval Officer's Wives Clubs and keeping active with the various and increasing responsibilities. Betty was involved for many years with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) organization. Active also in the many churches they attended (most recently the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, Va.), she served various roles with the Vestry, the Altar Guild, church outreach programs, and capital improvement programs, including leading the program for the stained glass window behind the altar of the Church of the Holy Comforter.
She worked at the Wolftrap Farm Park in the summer programs. Initially the work was in a volunteer capacity, she later became the Assistant Program Director for the 'Theater in the Woods', and for the annual International Children's Festival.
Betty enjoyed many hobbies over the years; the game of bridge, painting, decoupage, cooking, quilting, and doll making. During their retirement years, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and attending opera performances.
She is survived by her beloved husband William, her husband of 61 years, and by their children Melinda Adams of Williston, SC, Susan (Pete) Spaulding of Hollywood, MD, Mitchell Guthrie of Virginia Beach, VA, Kimberly (ACE) Russell of Sellersville, PA, Caroline Guthrie of Reston, VA, and by seven grandchildren.

Bill, my deepest sympathies on the passing of our lovely Betty. You and she were and are such a vital part of our Holy Comforter family. When I moved with my husband Bob and sons Henry and Tom to Vienna in 1979, I sat shyly in the back pew, and you were there and gave me such a warm welcome, I thought “This is a place where I can find a home.” Thanks for all your wonderful ministries, including the crucial Ministry of the Back Pew!
I was so saddened to learn of Betty’s passing and was sorry I could not attend the funeral. My family has fond memories of spending time with all the Guthries in the 70’s and beyond and we keep those memories close to our hearts. God bless you all. Love, Guffey
