Elizabeth Evans Amann

Elizabeth Evans Amann was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1936 and grew up surrounded by a family of Virginians. As a child, she loved music and became a gifted pianist, winning accolades at many piano competitions. She carried that love of music to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she graduated with a degree in music in 1958. After graduating, Elizabeth moved to Washington, DC and worked at the National Bureau of Standards. She met her husband, Louis Siegfried Amann, while living in Georgetown. They married at St. John’s Episcopal Church and, shortly thereafter, they decided to start their life together in Vienna, Virginia. From that point forward, Elizabeth lived in and loved the town of Vienna.

Elizabeth served the town of Vienna as an active member of the Greater Northwest Civic Association and championed many local issues to make her immediate Vienna Hills community a wonderful place to live. She raised her only child, Laura Elizabeth Amann, in Vienna and supported many youth activities. Elizabeth learned to love soccer while attending Laura's youth soccer games. She gladly volunteered to organize leagues and served as Secretary of the Vienna Youth Soccer organization for several years. She met many dear friends while involved and became a lifelong soccer fan as a result.

Elizabeth returned to employment in the late 1980’s as a Secretary and Technical Coordinator for the Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) in Vienna, Virginia. While at MSS, Elizabeth organized and modernized the management of technical standards. She loved working with manufacturing members across the United States and developed an appreciation for their profession as well as a genuine friendship with many of the members. She retired at 70 years of age with 20 years of service to MSS.

Throughout her life, Elizabeth found joy in many ways. She loved annual family trips to Bethany Beach where she could see and hear the ocean from her beachfront rental on the boardwalk. She continued to play the piano and loved to welcome in springtime by playing her favorite Chopin waltzes and to welcome in the holidays by playing Christmas carols at Thanksgiving. She also loved attending music performances of all kinds, especially Christmas choral concerts at Strathmore and symphony performances at the Kennedy Center. Elizabeth continued her love of soccer by watching as much as she could find on television. She was especially delighted by the success of the US Women’s National Soccer team and most recently celebrated their win in the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Elizabeth continued to enjoy and appreciate the company of her friends and neighbors in the Vienna Hills neighborhood.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Siegfried Amann and by her parents (Hayward Winfrey Evans and Lily Mollart Evans). She is survived by her daughter, Laura Elizabeth Amann of Reston, Virginia.

She will be buried in a private ceremony in Richmond, VA. A local celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department.

  1. Liz was a wonderful neighbor. We shared her love of cats and trees and had many happy conversations on these and other topics. I will think of her when I see our blooming forsythia bush, which she loved, as well as the many magnificent maples and coniferous trees she planted. What a glorious legacy! I will miss you, Liz and the happy greetings you always gave. You brightened our lives. Our condolences to Laura and the rest of Liz’s family and friends. – Susan and Fred Rexroad

  2. I am so very sad to see her pass. I worked with Liz for many years at MSS and she and I became very good friends. Her skills at the piano was very impressive. I thought of her as a child would see their own mother. My heart goes out to you Laura and the rest of the family. Steve Myers
