Elizabeth “Betsy” Burrowes passed away peacefully on Friday, February 16, 2024. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas “Skip” Burrowes. She was the loving mother to Jennifer Burrowes and Cynthia Ragone, mother-in-law to Matthew Ragone; and grandmother of Kathryn and Michael.

Betsy grew up in Springfield, Pennsylvania, graduating from Cedar Crest College in Allentown in 1958. After graduation, she decided to do something different with her life and became a stewardess for United Airlines, living in New York City, where she met Skip. Betsy and Skip married in 1962 and moved to Washington, D.C. They eventually settled in Vienna, Virginia where they raised their two daughters. Betsy’s professional career included working as a financial manager for a stock brokerage firm, reservations agent for Piedmont Airlines/U.S .Airways, and travel agent for SATO travel.

Betsy retired from U.S Airways in 2010 with lifetime travel benefits which she and Skip used extensively to travel all over the U.S. and Europe. Throughout their happy and productive lives, Betsy and Skip enjoyed spending time with family, neighbors, and lifelong friends; socializing; playing golf and tennis at Westwood Country Club; and spending winters in Ft. Lauderdale. Betsy was extremely proud of her daughters who have successful careers and happy lives in Northern Virginia, and even prouder of her grandchildren.

Betsy’s funeral will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, 10:30 am, at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, VA. Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Contributions in Betsy’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/

  3. Jennifer and Cindy, I was so sorry to hear of Betsy’s passing. She was a very dear friend of both my late husband David and myself. We had lots of laughs over the years enjoying meals, as well as music with Betsy and Skip at Wolf Trap on many July 4ths. You are both in my prayers.

  4. We have known Betsy for over 60 years. Skip was a friend and fraternity member of Joe’s. We were so happy when Skip and Betsy were married and came into our lives. Betsy was a wonderful friend, and we enjoyed many river cruises together. We always remained in contact throughout the years. We send our sincere sympathy and prayers for your family.
