Elizabeth Marion Stewart

January 6, 1931 ~ October 23, 2022
Elizabeth Marion Stewart (Betty) passed away peacefully on October 23, 2022 at her home in Falls Church, VA after a brief illness. In her final days, Betty was surrounded by her loving family and was in the hearts and prayers of her many dear friends most of whom described her as the “nicest person they had ever known”.
Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, Betty excelled in school attending Hunter High School for academically gifted students in Manhattan then furthering her education at Hunter College also in NYC. It was in NYC at a USO dance that Betty met a young cadet from the US Merchant Marine Academy, Charles Stewart, who had recently moved to the area from West Virginia to pursue his studies. This chance meeting of a City Girl and a Country Boy led to marriage four days after his graduation and almost 70 years of happiness together.
Married life took Betty away from NYC with time spent in Florida, Illinois, Michigan and NJ where she lived and worked for many years before settling at Goodwin House in Falls Church, VA. During her time in NJ, Betty volunteered for many activities in her children’s lives as well as in her church and community. Betty happily welcomed family and friends into her home where she insisted all were well cared for and definitely well fed! She was an avid reader who loved doing crossword puzzles, playing bridge, and learning new games to play with her friends at Goodwin House. With her kind and positive nature, Betty easily made friends with some of those friendships dating back to her early childhood in the Bronx.
Most of all, Betty cherished time with her family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren including taking vacations with all four generations each year. She continued to teach the family new games and also continued to win most of the games she played. She loved to travel in the US and abroad with a recent trip to Paris with family being particularly memorable.
Betty is survived by her devoted husband Charles, her daughters Barbara (Mark) Jacobs and Carol (Bob) Hughes, daughter in law Cheryl Stewart, and niece Anne (Jeff) Pokorny. She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents John & Marion Balletto and her son Robert Stewart.
Private family graveside services will be held at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, the donations in Betty’s name be made to Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Rd, McLean, VA 22101.

I remember Mrs Stewart (I never called her by her first name) as a wonderful grandmother to her three grandchildren, Andrew, David and Laura. When the kids were young and lived in Westmont, she and her husband were always going to garage sales to buy great gifts for the grandkids. When the family moved from Westmont I saw her less, but I would always hear stories of wonderful vacations and other events she would share with Barbara, Mark and the kids. I recently saw her at Laura’s wedding and she looked so healthy and beautiful for a woman of her age. She will be missed,!
