Eric John Franklin

Eric John Franklin, 52, died following a courageous battle with cancer, on October 27, 2016. He was born on April 27, 1964, in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Seneca Valley High School in Germantown, Maryland. In 1987, he received his Bachelors of Science from the University of California at Davis. He later earned his JD from American University's Washington College of Law in 1991. While in Washington D.C., he met his love, Dr. Barbara Mackie, and they married in 1992. Together they raised two children, John Eric (21), and Sarah (17). Eric worked as an attorney specializing in intellectual property, for the last 13 years at Venable LLP in D.C. Eric was a devoted dad and dedicated volunteer with the James Madison High School Marching Band's "Pit Crew," Boy Scout Committee Chairman and soccer coach. He was also a lover of Formula One racing, the mysteries of space, the outdoors, and his travels with his family, especially to the National Parks and Walt Disney World. He will be remembered most for his dry wit, strength of character, loyalty and devotion to his family. Eric is survived by his wife of 24 years, Barbara, children John Eric and Sarah, beloved dog Tricky, mother Karen Kiger (John), and sisters Paula Montes de Oca (Alex) and Lara. He was predeceased by his father Ralph. A celebration of Eric's life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, 2709 Hunter Mill Rd., Oakton, VA, on Sunday, November 6th at 3:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made in Eric's name to the following charities: GIST Cancer Research Fund, National Park Foundation, Boy Scouts of America, or James Madison High School Band Boosters.
