Esther Kremer McIntosh, August 19, 2016

Esther McIntosh was born on January 21, 1920 in Constance, Nebraska, to William Kremer and Mamie Plantenberg Kremer. She grew up on the family farm and enjoyed fishing in the creek and could be found reading under a bush when it was time for chores. When Esther was six her mother passed away and her father later married Agnes Schumacher. Esther graduated from Crofton High School in Crofton, Nebraska and completed nurse's training at St. Vincent's School of Nursing, Greenbrier College, in Sioux City, Iowa. She enlisted in the Army during WWII as a registered nurse. She worked for several hospitals throughout the United States, and after the war she was stationed at Fort Ord, California where she met her husband.

In 1950 Esther married Robert Bryant McIntosh. While stationed in Japan and Germany, Esther liked collecting beautiful paintings, furniture, and antique clocks. She also loved to dance, entertain, play bridge, and sew for her and Robert's five daughters. While raising them she instilled strong values of faith, family, hard work, and compassion. She encouraged her daughters to be independent, educated, well-traveled, and very much enjoyed spending time with them.

Esther was also dedicated to her career in the medical field and worked at Veterans Hospital in Baltimore and at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, retiring in 1995. She was well known at the hospitals and made many friends due to her outgoing and generous personality.

She was an active member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, in Vienna, Virginia, for 45 years. Esther moved to Falcon's Landing, a retirement community in Potomac Falls, Virginia, in 2012.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents William and Mamie Kremer, step-mother Agnes Kremer, sister Ethel Barbagelata, brother Daniel Kremer, brothers-in-law Vern Barbagelata, Cleo Wiebelhaus, Leon Gobel and sister-in-law Melba Kremer.

She is survived by her children Laurie McIntosh, Dana Souser (Rich), Jeanne Kelley (Bill), Andrea McIntosh, and Karen McIntosh (Stuart Hardegree); grandchildren Joe Kelley (Debe), Patrick, Ginger and Will Kelley, Andrew and Charlotte Souser; Emily, Kelly, Kevin, Michael, Melody, and Angelina Hardegree, sisters Angela Wiebelhaus and Geraldine Gobel, brother Bill Kremer and sister-in-law Lynne Kremer; great-grandchildren Brittany, Elijah, Lily, Domi, Pheobe and Audrey.

A Mass of Catholic Burial and internment with her late husband, will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, at a later date.
