Eugene E. Champagne

Eugene Champagne was born in 1927 in Plattsburgh, NY. He served his country for about 60 years, first as an enlisted soldier in Europe and then 52 years in the Foreign Service at postings around the world, many of them remote and dangerous, including Pakistan, Laos, Cambodia, Jordan, and Egypt, as well as Romania, Canada, India, and Belgium. He continued to work in his area of expertise, security, until this year. His wife, Connie, who predeceased him in 2012, accompanied him to all of the assignments after their marriage in Athens in 1951; she also worked for the State Department for many of those years. His many awards include the Secretary's Career Achievement Award and the Department of State Superior Honor Award. His survivors include his brother-in-law, Ronald E. Morris (Gilda), and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church, McLean, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday December 16, preceded by visitation at the church at 10:30 a.m.. Burial will follow immediately at Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington,

I wish to express my sincere condolences to Gene’s family. I worked with Gene for several years and he was one of the kindest people I have ever had the opportunity to know. I will miss him.
