Born in: Silver Spring, MD
Resided in: Vienna, VA

Everett Van Slyck Barnes, 96, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 11,
2024, at his home, with his children by his side. Everett is predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Joan Mary Barnes.

Everett was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, graduated from American University, and had a distinguished career at the CIA, where he met his wife. Everett and Joan were married on June 11, 1955, and settled in Vienna, VA, to raise their family of 5 children. Everett was a generous and loving father, and Everett and Joan were devoted to each other and best friends. We all are thankful to them for the strength of our family.

An accomplished athlete, Everett was a long-time member of D.C. Road Runners, training for and running races and marathons. He rode horses, hiked with his dogs, and enjoyed gardening. Everett was creative. He designed and built a cabin in Lost City, West Virginia, where he and Joan enjoyed their weekends. He was an imaginative wood-worker, designing and building furniture, as well as the out-buildings on their properties. His life-long interest in art included drafting, drawing, and oils—from taking drafting classes at the Corcoran as a teenager to oil-painting into his 90’s, focusing on animals and land- and sea-scapes.

Everett and Joan adored their grandchildren and delighted in watching them grow and
play ball. They adopted rescue dogs and cats—often animals toward end-of-life—who gave
them great joy and were good company. Everett supported his children’s pursuits and interests-
–in music, for example—and Joan in her church work. Everett was a Red Cross Ten-Gallon
donor in 1983 and an Inova Super Donor of apheresis in 1994.

Everett is survived by his 5 children: Barbara Mary Barnes; Everett Van Slyck Barnes, Jr.
(Deborah Lamar Barnes); Timothy David Barnes (Melany Beth Barnes); Jeannine Carol Barnes;
and Diane Barnes Case. Everett also has 6 beloved grandchildren: William Daniel Case, Mary
Ella Barnes, Samuel Everett Case, Megan Alison Barnes, Bradley David Barnes, and Christina
Lucia Barnes.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Rappahannock Animal Rescue
League (RAWL).
