Fredrick Shirley

Fred was born on November 27, 1931 in Tompkinsville. KY where he grew up. After high school, he joined the Army and served in the Korean War. After the war, he attended the University of Kentucky. After graduating he joined the State Department and served as a Diplomatic Courier for 10 years, traveling to 96 countries. After 6 years as a Courier, he became a Foreign Service Officer and had posts in Germany, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Philippines, Austria, Panama and Belgium. He retired in 1989 but continued to work in the private sector until 2009. Fred passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2016. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Dineke, 3 children, Brian, Margaret and Steve; daughter-in-law, Jennifer; son-in-law, Eric; 7 grandchildren, Tatum, Jacquelene, Olivia, Keegan, Charlotte, Nico and Nathan; niece Charlotte. Although I never met Frederick in person, I always held him in high esteem. I also grew up in Tompkinsville, Kentucky. I am sorry for his passing..
