George R. Kaplan
Educator, Diplomat. Passed away on February 14, 2014. Mr. Kaplan was born in Cambridge, MA, received his graduate degree from Clark University, and served in Europe in the 78th Infantry Division in World War II. He worked 3 years in Karlsruhe, Germany as a member of the Dept. of the Army team writing the history of the military occupation of Germany. He joined the State Dept. in 1953 as an intelligence analyst, later serving in Vietnam, Romania, and the former Czechoslovakia.
In 1970 he moved to the U.S. Office of Education, heading Teacher Corps programs. In 1974 he began working for the City University of NY Graduate Center and the Institute for Educational Leadership, where he cofounded/directed the Washington Policy Seminar. As independent consultant to educational and non-profits, he wrote books on teacher training, educational leadership, and media's coverage of education. Mr. Kaplan was a frequent contributor to major national periodicals on education policy.
His wife, Pamela Field Kaplan, died in 2006. Survivors include children Amy Kaplan, Daphne Kaplan and David Kaplan, as well as 3 grandchildren. Internment will be private.
