Hale Almy Ament

Hale Ament, 71, a 40-year Reston resident, died peacefully at her home June 24, following a twenty-month battle with breast cancer. Born Helen Hale Almy in Providence, Rhode Island, she grew up in Front Royal, Virginia, graduated from Warren County High School in 1958 and from the College of William & Mary in 1962.

Hale was active in the Reston community, where she volunteered with the Greater Reston Arts Center to present art to elementary school students. In the early 1980s, she headed the Reston Street Lighting Advisory Committee, where she successfully championed the use of low-glare bulbs. For that work, Hale was awarded the title of Restonian of the Year in 1992 by the Reston Citizens Association. She was active in the American Association of University Women's Reston-Herndon Branch and served as branch Cultural Affairs chair and a mentor to local students.

A devotee of Virginia history, Hale read widely and shared her knowledge with others as an Historian at the Sully Historic Site from 1983 through 2007. Following her retirement from Sully, Hale and her husband continued their travels, visiting European and American historic sites, friends, and family.

Hale is survived by W. William Ament, her husband of 44 years, and two daughters, Carolyn H. Ament of New York City, and Margaret W. Ament of Reston. She also leaves behind her brother, Richard R. Almy of LaGrange, Illinois; two sisters, Elizabeth A. Davis of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, and Rebecca T. Graves of Clemmons, North Carolina; and five nieces and three nephews.

She will be missed dearly by all those who knew her.

A private memorial service for friends and family is planned. Contributions may be made in Hale's memory to F.C.P.A.--Sully Memorial Fund, Sully Historic Site, 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, VA 20151, Attn: Carol McDonnell, Site Manager, or to Greater Reston Arts Center, 12001 Market Street, Suite #103 Reston, VA 20190.

  1. Please accept my sympathy. I was saddened to see the news in the paper. I was a docent at Sully from 1988-2008 and it was a pleasure knowing her and learning from her. I will miss her.
