Harold E. Campbell, Jr.
On January 10th, 2023, Harold Campbell Jr. passed away peacefully of natural causes. Harold
was surrounded by the love of family members at the Tall Oaks Assisted Living facility in
Reston, Virginia at the time of his passing. He was 88 years old.
Harold was the cherished third child, and first son, of Hester and Harold Campbell. His early
years were spent growing up on a farm amidst a close-knit family of grandparents, siblings,
and visiting aunts and uncles. Harold treasured his rural upbringing as a Maine farm boy, and
he relished telling stories from that time of his life.
An enthusiastic student, Harold attended the small one-room school house in West
Gouldsboro. He graduated from Sumner High School in Sullivan, Maine where he was voted
“most athletic”, “best personality”, and “class flirt”. Afterwards he attended the University of
Maine where he obtained his mechanical engineering degree. He briefly attended training in
the US Army but was released before serving on active duty. Harold began his career working
at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he notably worked on the USS Thresher.
In the early 60s, he moved to Washington DC and began working as a civilian for the US Navy
in the Anti-Submarine Warfare division. He eventually concluded his civil service career and
continued his professional journey at AT&T and Vitro Corporation before retirement.
Harold’s life was rich with many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed gardening and was a skilled
woodworker. He loved reading, especially historical non-fiction, classic literature, and modern
detective stories. He also liked collecting antiques, traveling, and debating history and politics
with anyone who was interested.
His greatest joy was spending time in downeast Maine. He was a lifetime member of and
volunteer at the Gouldsboro Historical Society, where he collaborated with his sister, Beatrice
Buckley, to produce a Historical Society publication about the vanishing barns of Gouldsboro,
Maine.
Harold is survived by his wife Alicia, his daughters Angela Goodhart (Brian) and Lisa Schaaf
(Brian), from his first marriage, his son Harold Campbell III (Angelica), and his step-son
Christian Alvarez. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, as well as his sister Beatrice
Buckley. Harold was predeceased by his father Harold Campbell, his mother Hester Campbell,
and sister, Irene Cote.
