Harry Waldon Tennant
Harry Tennant passed away in Naples, FL, on July, 09 2024 from
natural causes. He was born on November 9, 1918 to William Moses
Tennant and Gertha Belle (McCall) Tennant in a logging camp on the
bank of the Cowpasture River in Southwest Virginia. He grew up in
Williamsville, VA and graduated from Millboro High School. He
continued his interest in higher learning and earned a Bachelor’s Degree
in Business Administration from Berea College.
While attending Berea College he met and married Ethel Shrader and
they were happily married for 65 years. He is survived by his beloved
children, William (Gail), Rhudy (Jeanne), Stephen, and Joan Reyes
Tennant (Joseph); seven grandchildren Remy, Susanne, Cristine,
Gregory, Andrew, Lindsey and Ryan; and eight great-grandchildren
Noah, Ava, Lucas, Brooklyn, Blair, Hunter, Wesley, and Lydia. Harry was
deeply devoted to his family and always grateful to be of service to
others.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor he immediately enlisted in the
US Navy. He retired with the rank of Commander after serving both
active and reserve duty. The highlights of his naval career were
during his early years where he served as the Gunnery Officer on LST
307; and crossed the English Channel more than 100 times to deliver
soldiers, equipment, and ammunition in the European theatre.
With the war over, his professional career began. Rising to the
Executive level in the Federal Government he directed world-wide
supply systems supporting the military, State Department, and
humanitarian programs. After retirement, he worked as a consultant,
assisting foreign nations while coordinating supply logistics and
construction projects.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite
humanitarian service in Harry Tennant’s name.
