Hattie Mary Malinowski
October 13, 1929 ~ March 6, 2021
Hattie Mary Malinowski, longtime resident of Vienna, Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family at Reston Hospital on March 6, 2021. Hattie was born in Butternut, Wisconsin, on October 13, 1929. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Ludwig and Mary Kolonko, brothers Joseph, Adam, Louis, Michael Kolonko and sisters Sophie Kolonko Murphy and Anna Kolonko.
She is survived by her four children: Robert (Sylvia) Malinowski, Anne (Patrick) Clougherty, Barbara (William) Clougherty, and John (Barbara) Malinowski. And sixteen loving grandchildren: Michael, Kristen, and David Malinowski; Elise, John, William, and Bennett Clougherty; Joshua, Hattie, Justine, Mary Sophia, and Leo Clougherty; and Gregory, Rachel, Daniel, and Sarah Malinowski.
Born on a dairy farm in upstate Wisconsin, Hattie spent her childhood milking cows, planting corn, digging up potatoes, and walking to school where she attended grades one through eight in a one-room schoolhouse. After graduating from Northland University with a B.S in mathematics, Hattie moved to Chicago where she worked as an engineering assistant and office manager at Motorola in the engineering defense department. There she met the love of her life, Leonard Peter Malinowski.
On October 29, 1955, Leonard and Hattie were married at Our Lady Help of Christians in Chicago, Illinois. Shortly after their wedding, they moved to Southern California, where their marriage was blessed by four children: Robert, Anne, Barbara, and John. In 1964, Leonard and Hattie drove their young family across the country to start a new life in Vienna, Virginia, where they became active members of the community and lifelong parishioners of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church.
Hattie was known for her life of service. She served the parishioners of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish as well as the residents of Illiff Nursing Home as a president of the PTA, president of the Women of OLGC, contemporary music ensemble director, and as a nursing home volunteer for more than forty years. As she grew in her faith and in her love for the Church, Hattie became involved in the Cursillo movement where she led the music team, delivered insightful talks, and coordinated retreats. Throughout her life, Hattie loved partaking in the sacraments and sharing the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist with others. Until the beginning of Covid quarantine at the age of 90, Hattie was still visiting the sick and distributing Communion to the homebound.
In addition to her involvement with the Church, Hattie was an avid organic gardener who loved to spend time tending to her extensive garden and often consulted with other experts, made numerous speeches, and gave an extended interview on a news magazine television program. Mostly, Hattie loved spending time with her family. After her love for God, Hattie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Nothing made her happier than chatting, laughing, and praying with her family.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, March 12 at 10:00 am, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, Virginia. Due to the Covid pandemic, masks are required for all attendees.
In lieu of flowers, a fundraising page has been set up for donations to Restore Dignity under a tribute to Hattie Mary Malinowski: www.restoredignity.com
