Hazel Crowder Hall

(Age 94)

Hazel Melvinia Crowder Hall passed through the gates of Heaven in the early morning of 3 March 2017, to finally be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She lived an amazing life of 94 years with her memories still intact and her mind sharp on most days. In July 2015, we almost lost her when she suffered a massive stroke. She said she wanted to hang on a little longer for her children. She was living at the Fairfax Nursing Center where the nurses and aides loved her because she had become a story teller. One lady told us she was writing down the recipes for her desserts. Her first love in life was Jesus and she spoke of Him often. Second in line was her husband, Ivan Nelson Hall, Sr. who passed on 19 April 2010. Then her family was next. One of her greatest joys in life was her family. The Hall family asks that you join us in celebrating the life of Hazel Crowder Hall. Hazel was a wonderful wife and Mother. She was an amazing homemaker and her greatest joy in life was in taking care of her family and serving others. Her life was anchored to her faith in the Lord Jesus and she showed His love to everyone. Hazel is survived by her three children, Ivan N. Hall, Jr. and wife, Patti; Michael W. Hall and wife, Teresa; Donna L. Hall and husband, Jerry; her grandchildren, Michael W. Hall II and wife, Melissa; Ivan N. Hall III and wife, Rita; Rebecca L. McFarland and husband, Daniel; Christopher R. Hall, and her crowning achievement, 2 great grandsons, Michael III and Mason, and another great-grandson on the way. She is survived by one sister, Daphine Fowlkes and spouse, W.A., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 8 brothers and sisters, Louis Crowder, Worth Crowder, Maggie Crowder, Louise Chaney, Hallie Crowder, Charlie Crowder, David Crowder, and Georgia Elliott.

Hazel was born on 14 August 1922 in Wake County North Carolina to Mary Timberlake (26 July 1890 to 24 Sep 1964) and David Charles Crowder (29 April 1890 to 31 Dec 1967). She was one of ten children and grew up in a happy home in Danville, Virginia.

Hazel met her husband, Ivan in Danville and on 16 October 1942, she made good on her promise to be Ivan Hall's wife. They were married in Danville after Ivan's stint in the U.S. Army. They had a wonderful marriage for the next 67 years until Ivan Sr. passed on 19 April 2010. Ivan went to work in Washington, D.C. while Hazel lived in Danville near her family and had her first child, Ivan N., Jr. Soon after his birth, Ivan had saved enough to move his family to northern Virginia where they had two more children, Michael Wayne and Donna Lynn. For the next thirty years Hazel continued to live in northern Virginia where she took care of her husband, her home, raised her 3 children, and worked 3 jobs. She took care of her parents and in-laws and remained close to her brothers and sisters, as well as Ivan's brothers and sisters. Hazel served in her local churches and helped in her community.

When Ivan Hall retired from the U.S. Postal Service, he built Hazel a large home on 26 acres of beautiful farmland in Sperryville, Virginia. She had a beautiful home with plenty of room for her children and grandchildren to celebrate holidays and birthdays. The house was always filled with the smell of homemade pies and cobblers, one of her many specialties. Hazel and Ivan spent their retirement years raising fruits and vegetables to sell at their roadside stand known far and wide as "Sperryville Farms". Hazel became known near and far for her marvelous homemade jams and jellies. People drove from West Virginia, Maryland and D.C. to purchase apples, other fresh fruits and vegetables, and especially, Hazel's homemade apple butter. For a while, they had a home in Citrus Springs, Florida where they joined other retired snow birds to stay warm each winter.

After the passing of her husband, Hazel moved to The Gardens at Fair Oaks. After Michael and Melissa stopped by to show her the sonogram picture of her first great grandchild, Hazel had a new zest for living. She was happy because her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all lived within a 10 mile radius of her and could visit often. People often stopped by to eat lunch with her. She spent the next five years there making new friends easily and winning often at Bingo.

She had a wonderful life of 94 years filled with her love of God, family, and friends. After a live well lived, Hazel has finally gone home to her final destination.
