Irene (Rene') Mary Curry, who lived mostof her life in Hazleton, Pa., died on September 16th at Birmingham Green Nursing Home in Manassas, Va., after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born May 1, 1925 in Stockton, Pa., to her beloved father George Kovatch, Sr., and mother Susan Lengen Kovatch. She attended Hazle Township High School. After being married in 1947, she lived in McAdoo for many years until the 1966 death of her dear husband Joseph Anthony Curry, a conductor for the Reading Railroad. She then lived in Hazleton for most of her life, until moving to be near her daughter in Fairfax, Virginia eight years ago where she also decided to exercise the privilege of age and unofficially changed her first name to Rene'. She celebrated her 90th birthday at home before moving to the nursing home shortly thereafter.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Slovak Roman Catholic Church, Hazleton, and was married there in 1947. She was a regular attendee at Mass and had a beautiful voice, gracing everyone around her with song all through her life, with a special affection for and ability to sing the Ave Maria. Her Father performed in a band and played both the base and the violin; near the end of life, the music of the violin brought her peace through difficult day as she shared her Father's great love of music. She worked in various clothing stores in Hazleton, and enjoyed finding fashions for herself and others, something she shared with her beloved granddaughter Emily. She loved people and talked to everyone to brighten their day, always with a kind word and a smile. Most of all, she was a wonderful Mother, raising her children as a single Mother. She was devoted to the Virgin Mary and prayed to her until the very end of her life on earth.

Irene is survived by three children: Kathleen Curry Santora and her husband Hugo, Virginia; James Curry, Maryland; and Joseph Curry and his wife Maria, Florida; as well as four grandchildren- Emily (daughter of Kathleen and Jimmy, Skylar and Joe (children of James). She was predeceased in death by her beloved first child Mary Frances, who died in 1952 at age 3, and by her three siblings Margaret (Sterba) Yachera, George Kovatch, Jr., and Michael Kovatch.

A service will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, September 26th at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, Va. She will be buried with her husband as she requested at All Saints Cemetery (formerly St. Patricks Cemetery) in McAdoo.
