Iris A. Moncada

iris moncada
Iris Amanda Moncada was born Iris Amanda Velasquez in La Ceiba, Honduras on July 29, 1940. Her parents were Honduran nationals and she was the eldest of two children. She met her husband-to-be, Hector R. Moncada, in La Ceiba. She joined Hector in America a year after his arrival, and they wed in New York City in March of 1962.

Once in the United States, they quickly learned English, proudly obtained U.S. citizenship and diligently worked toward the American dream of home ownership.

After the birth of their first child, Virginia, Iris returned to work in Manhattan. She polished her knowledge of the export-import business and continued her career as a working mother after the birth of her son, Hector, Jr. She relocated from New York to Northern Virginia in 1993 with her husband and son to accept a position with the Export-Import Bank of the United States, from where she retired in 2003. During her years with EXIM Bank, she reveled in her successes and enjoyed her work travel to several countries.

Iris loved a fine restaurant, beautiful clothes, hosting a great party, travel and spending time with family and friends. She had an inimitable style and a zest for life. While she was slowed down in her later years by the debilitating challenges of Parkinson’s disease, she faced them head on with incredible strength of character and determination. She taught all of those around her extraordinary lessons about patience, quiet fortitude and respect for others.

Iris will be remembered for her kind and compassionate nature. She was a generous and loving wife and mother. She had a quiet strength, always thinking about how she might help others. There was a special place in her heart for children in need in her home country of Honduras.

Friends and family wishing to honor Iris are invited to donate in her name to Save the Children, UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders.
