  1. Herb and Irv were model train buddies whose association goes back many, many years. I can often recall coming home from work and finding Irv and Jack Barnes, Bill Haugen and others – all happily ‘playing’ at Herb’s downstairs layout, or watching various train videos. When I would sometimes overhear their conversations, their ‘trainspeak’ was always a mystery to me – having to do with moving this engine here or that train should go on that track, or arguing (mostly Irv) as to the the arrival and departure times, and whether they were accurate. New proposals were offered (Irv again) as to how Herb should re-do his layout patterns – rip that out, put in new tracks with switches here, etc. He was always happy to come up with new ideas, regardless of how often they were shot down. I never understood exactly what they were doing, but they always left happy. Irv was a true character – in overalls. We’ll both miss him and are deeply saddened at his passing ………….. Herb and Pat Harper

  2. Irv was like a father to me as my dad passed away when I was 17. When I joined the Northern Virginia model Railroad, he guided me in my quest of rejoining a hobby of my youth. Irv was very willing to help and teach me. As my own dad said about people he liked –Irv would give you the shirt off his back! I’ll never forget the time I put Redbud trees on the NVMR layout and was chastised by a more senior member (not present today :)). I was ready to quit, but Irv pointed out that the club, the members, and the visitors were far more important than this incident. He also had a heart for the children. To me that is a major part of the train station. He truly enjoyed seeing them come to watch the trains and showed up even when not feeling well to be “conductor Irv.” May God use Irv in heaven to make people happy as he did here on earth.

  3. Maggie (and Family): I remember fondly sharing several fun Seder meals at your parents home…your Dad leading the ceremony. I know what a tough time this is…sadly, MaryBeth Emmons
