Janeen Donaly Vokoun
April 6, 1933 October 19, 2016
When Janeen Vokoun talked of her youth, each story had a mystique. She lived through the dust bowl in Kansas. She grew up on a farm outside Kearney. The farm was near the Kearney airport where she watched World War II bombers take off on their way to the west coast. She talked of being clotheslined while riding a horse. She attended country school with her only sibling Colette Donaly Jones. She did not swim or see well but waterskied without glasses anyway.
Janeen worked as a bank cashier, a computer operator and a tax analyst. As an officer in farm businesses, she helped manage the Donaly family farms.
Janeen lived to love. She developed her strengths through raising her children as a single parent. She helped remodel her homes while raising four children and working full time. Her children have memories of her burning paint on the exterior second story of one of their homes. Janeen was a devoted animal lover and most recently enjoyed Nikki as her companion. First and foremost, she was a selfless mother.
Janeen's children were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from her. Let a dog sleep in your bed. Persevere in extremely challenging circumstances. Don't eat too many cookies. Let grandchildren stay up late as long as you are reading to them. Watch baseball whenever you can. Go to college. A woman can do anything. You cannot read too many books. Always vote. Forgive liberally. Love unconditionally.
Janeen Vokoun was born in Logan County, KS to Lloyd Leland Donaly and Nellie Bertrand Donaly. She passed away in Falls Church, VA surrounded by her children. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Vokoun and son-in-law Larry Randall; daughter Susan Vokoun Baird and son-in-law Michael Baird; son Michael Vokoun and daughter-in-law Gina Vokoun; and son Ron Vokoun and daughter-in-law Dara Schulenberg. She is also survived by seven beloved grandchildren. Her marriage to Edward Vokoun ended in divorce.
