John A. Mattos

October 7, 1950 ~ February 22, 2013
John Albert Mattos, beloved husband of Elizabeth Clauhsen, proud and adoring father of his daughter Amanda and loving brother of Kristie Mattos Dalidio lost his valiant battle with stage IV pancreatic cancer on Friday February 22. He was the son of John F. and Lillian Hoyle Mattos and is the stepson of Marge Mattos.
John devoted his professional life to the further growth and development of Mattos Paints/Profinishes Plus, a pioneering company founded by his grandfather in Washington, D.C. and now active in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania as well. John served as their President until his retirement a few years ago. He is a member of the company's Board of Directors and a well-known and highly regarded person in the automotive aftermarket business.
Born in Washington, D.C., he lived the majority of his 62 years in Fairfax, Vienna and Dunn Loring, Virginia. He treasured the time he spent each summer on Pleasure Bay at the family's home in Stone Harbor, New Jersey.
John will be well remembered for his very vibrant personality, exceptional generosity, great sense of humor, quick mind and mastery of numbers and statistics (for business, major sports teams and personal golf games!). He was a man who valued his relationships more than anything else, and the countless friends, colleagues and family members who loved him are the greatest testament to his life achievements. He also derived great satisfaction from the strong community he helped build as a decades long member of Chantilly National Country Club in Virginia.
In lieu of a funeral or memorial service, a life celebration party will be held for John in the near future, specifics to be announced under separate cover.

The memories with John are boundless. The fun that we had together will never be forgotten. John was a “Man’s Man”. I will always carry John’s memory in my heart as he was one of my closest friends. I, along with a lot of John’s friends can share a lot of stories….all good!!!!!! To Liz and Amanda, please accept our deepest condlences. With deepest regrets, Bobby and Joanna Burke
I haven’t seen john in years. When we were both young, I was a painters helper in Riockville,John was the delivery truck driver for the new Mattos store in Rockville,around1968-69. We bacame good friends. john got me my first job as a painter.John was a wonderful man. god bless john and his family.
John was a generous person to work for. He loved to show his employees his appreciation, especially at Christmas time. He made you feel like family. Although I didn’t really know him on a personal level, I can say he was a nice person and will be greatly missed. God Bless.
I was the DuPont sales rep for the Mattos organization beginning in 1983.Though I had not seen John for many years, I remember him as the salesman who worked longer hours then anyone I knew to grow his business He seemed to know everybody in the auto body trade and worked at keeping his customers supplied with good help. We had good times together selling paint. I could never beat him at golf, and I will miss him.
John will be greatly missed. I had the pleasure of growing up within the company. Both him and his father helped make me the man I am today. I will always carry on there generosity and care for others. Always made you feel like a part of the family. Great man
On behalf of the entire Ellison family, I would like to send my condolences and prayers to the Mattos family. John will be truly missed and his presence will continue to be felt on an everyday basis. The Mattos family has done so much just in the past year alone to aid my family with the loss of my father, Steve Ellison and I am happy to know that my father will now have another buddy up there to talk business with. God bless!
I was so sorry to hear about John’s passing. John and Howard worked together for many years at Mattos Inc. and I know if Howard was still with us he would have a lot of stories about the many adventures they had together. Just know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Please let me know when you decide on the date of John’s celebration. My condolences to the Matto’s Family!
My wife and I were so sorry to hear about John’s illness. John and I go way back, to high school, with many great memories. He was a true friend that would do anything for you…no matter what. We will truly miss everything about him and most of all the memories.

John will be missed. What a great guy! When John and I met, I was a young painter trying to master the craft. John knew I had my heart into custom work so he encouraged me to pursue that art. Luckily, John was able to connect me to a custom shop known as Chester’s Corvette Shop. Thanks to John, I mastered the craft and I was able to open Butch’s Coach and Customs. I enjoyed our chats, our friendship and his encouragement. He will be missed by all. What a good guy and a great friend.
We consider John one of our best friends ever! we will miss him very much. My parents as well as myself had the pleasure of knowing John, his father and grandfather a great family. Thanks for all the great times & memories. .
Dear Elizabeth & Family, John certainly could light up a room with his exuberant personality !! Roger and I are focusing on the most pleasant memories of the two of you. We certainly hope in this time of grief that you can find some peace in knowing the joy he gave to others. Our Love Karen Ragan & Roger Salen
John was a great guy and a friend of my husband Bob. His smile could light up a room and I loved his laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with you Elizabeth and all his family.
There is not a week that goes by that I don’t think about John Mattos. He was larger than life. I remember when he was a teenager (13-15) and his dad would bring him into the Mattos store on Saturday’s and tell me to work him hard! And he always worked hard. You always knew that John was out calling on his customers (read that friends) and looking to meet new ones. A great memory for detail. I remember making a call with him in Catonsville, Md at a VW dealer on Route 40. He had not been in that particular shop for over ten years, but still remembered the shop layout, the primary people who had been there and what paint line they were using. It was a joy to read the comments from his friends on this site and remember the good times. They don’t make better men or friends than John Mattos! I miss him.
